Daniel Tn, Ft Loudon Tailwater, White bass and rockfish -- Foley Spoons, 09-18-15, Wife

We headed below the dam Friday evening before the crowds got there. The white bass were breaking big and this time around, we saw the foley spoon magic. Using the 1 5/8 size in white with a 1/2 oz sinker. I had a fish on my first cast...decided to try some 6 lb flouro as my leader and that was a good combo for getting bites but they kept breaking me off. I went back to 12 lb test and me and my wife literally lost count at the number of whites we caught. Some were pretty decent size. We had boats coming to us trying to catch fish and were blocking us from casting. At one time we had 4 boats trying to drift the breaks that I could have hit with my spoon. Every time they would motor back up stream, it would spook the shad and the whites would go crazy.

Then our catching attracted the attention of other bank fisherman. We finally had to leave cause I had 6 people to the right of me within a rods length and two on my left. I couldn't even cast anymore. Before they got so close, we was catching 10-12 to their 1. One of them asked me what I was using and if I had anymore. So I sold him one spoon, swivel, and sinker for $5 :) I think his buddies thought he was crazy and then after a few mins they were ready to throw him in and steal his rod. He started catchin fish too.

Looks like you and the Missus had a lot of fun.. Too bad the boaters and bankers got in your way.

Two of the boaters got into a confrontation. One of them had been drifting and giving us distance, and was catching his share of whites too...then a center console boat with a couple guys in it came running up. First they started drifting and weren't catching anything. The other boat was...so they motor to right in front of us and there they put down an anchor and blocked the other guys drift lane. The other fella had been there the better part of a couple hrs with nobody else around. He let em know he didn't appreciate their lack of manners.. We just stood there grinning, hearing every word. I thought at one point he was gonna climb in their boat and whoop both of them.

The other bank fisherman did edge us out a little bit. I don't have anything against Mexicans but I was a bit uncomfortable with 8 of them crowding us like they did, and most of the time they were speaking Spanish which I could only pick out bits and pieces of. I would have liked to stayed longer but we decided to leave before it got dark

Really glad you got to see what all the fuss is about when the foley bite is on fire. You also go to see what it's like to be the center of fellow fishermens jealousy when your the only guy catching fish!

SpurHunter -- I will be contacting you to get a few more of them in the 2" size and the smaller size. I can picture them working even better by being able to drift with them in a boat. From the bank you are limited to what areas you can cover; especially when you get crowded and can't even do a sidearm cast without hitting somebody with your rod and or tangled in their lines. The rockfish in the pic fought good and ran right through their lines; they wouldn't even reel in to give me room to fight the fish. Last week I think I might have been over working them. This go around I caught more by throwing above the breaking fish instead of throwing at them... and letting the rig drift through them with the current. Sometimes I wouldn't have to do anything and then at most, I would pull it to me with the rod to take up slack. I might have caught a couple that hit as I was reeling in but most came by just letting it drift through them. Sort of like trout fishing.

It is a hoot to catch these fish on Foley's. I guess if you hit a couple of guys in the head with the 1/2 oz sinker as you were side arm casting, they would get the message and give some more room. I know what it is like to watch others try to figure out what the heck you are doing when you are reeling them in on every cast and they couldn't catch a cold during the flu season. Grin.

I have bank fished right there a lot and if you catch some fish the swarm of people will swallow you. I always give them a few fish and they usually back away although it still doesn't stop some. I have also witnessed more than a few boat altercations there. Seems like a blue runabout is usually at the center of the altercations
