Everyone has their own opinion and or method of hook removal; but for me, this tool, which I bought at Dick's for 99 cents, has been the quickest, most effective, and easiest way to remove the hook from a fish's gullet!
Step 1: Cut your line about a foot above the hook
Step 2: Place hook removal tool in fish's mouth
Step 3: Ensure that the hook's shank is securely seated in the removal tool's slotted groove or on the ball of removal tool
Step 4: While holding the fish by the lip in one hand, wrap the excess fishing line that is still attached to the eye of the hook around the fingers on the opposite hand and place the thumb, also from opposite hand, over the end of the removal tool... using your wrapped up/gripping fingers, pull excess line toward rear end of tool... this will create line tension which will keep the hook securely attached to the removal tool once it's freed from the fish's gullet
Step 5: With tension applied, firmly push removal tool into fish's stomach in one smooth motion until hook is removed... this action will forcefully remove the hook from the gullet just like we'd normally remove the hook from it's mouth... once free of the gullet, the hook's point and barb will either slide into the slotted groove on the tool or become seated so close to the rounded portion of removal tool that it can't pierce any tissue when removed
Step 6: MOST IMPORTANT PART... WHEN REMOVING THE TOOL FROM THE FISH'S STOMACH AND EVENTUALLY THE MOUTH... KEEP YOUR THUMB FIRMLY SECURED TO THE REAR END OF THE REMOVAL TOOL AND KEEP THE LINE TIGHT AT ALL TIMES!!! THIS FORCES THE TOOL AND HOOK TO BE REMOVED FROM THE FISH AS ONE UNIT. IT ALSO ENSURES THAT THE HOOK'S POINT AND BARB REMAIN FIRMLY SEATED IN THE TOOL'S SLOTTED GROOVE OR ON THE BALL PORTION OF THE TOOL ELIMINATING THE CHANCE OF HOOKING THE FISH AGAIN DURING THE REMOVAL PROCESS.
