Check out this disturbing video of a gill net in coastal NC.

It is a shame that Chickamauga and Nickajack are not stocked with stripers due to the nets. I know a great striper fishery would bring alot of money to the area for bait, tackle, guides, hotels, etc. Just look at how the few reports posted by DHaun sparked a bird chasing frenzy.

Last summer while fishing near Harrison bay I was in a cove that had 4 gill nets running across it. I spinnerbait got caught in it, so I went to untagle it and decided to check out a little bit of what I could lift quickly. There quite a few dead yellow bass, a few largemouth and a few drum. Yet the gill net guys say that they never get striper and bass. It's all bull. I don't care if people have trot lines or jugs, but the gill nets have to go!!!!

I had the honor of going with my Dad with his friends to Top-Sail Island, NC this past year for a week long fishing trip. We had a wonderful time and promised I would make it an annual event, they have done for 20 yrs together. We discussed this a few times after reading some references to gill nets in the local paper and fishing rags... We didn't know anything about them and figured it was just another guys way of fishing. So be it. But I know fishing. I also was raised to not shoot or keep anything you aren't going to eat or give to someone who will. That is absolutely disgusting. I noticed the bouy on the end said NC. I cannot fathom a mere $35 fine for an unattended net. If you feel the same as me, then let's not just merely gripe about it. Hey guys, google your local congressman, state senator and let them know how you feel. One email may seem a lost cause, but I've seen a number of them get attention and actually create change. Get involved with our fisheries. This is the same as taking 6 limits of crappies. Thanks for the post and opening my eyes to something I was completely ignorant to. Though I am a resident of TN now, I paid my money to fish in NC. They rely on our dollars there. The business community would be outraged as well.

This is another reason that we should all that agree get a petition started and have 100's of signatures to ban gill nets in TN in ALL lakes and rivers. You can see on the video that in fresh water that a gill net does not see the differnce between fish. Why should people be able to do this to a public resource?

I don't know a lot about gill netting. Who is doing it and what are they doing with the fish they catch?
I was fishing at the river park one night and was headed up river between the RR bridge and the Dupont bridge and someone had either a gill net or a trotline run all the way across the main channel. My buddy had a spot light to find bouys and other boats and we didn't see it. The only reason I noticed it was cause I got a phone call and slowed to a stop to take it. We almost ran right over it. Has anyone ever hit one and what would it do if you did?

i ran over a trot line that was in way to shallow water one night, it took me over an hour to cut the tangled mess out of my prop. once i did i cut both ends of the line and drug it ashore where i left it for the owner to find.

I sent my email to the State Senator and our State Rep. Who will join me???

I will as well. I also forwarded this video to the TWRA and several biologist. I wanted them to see the possible harm that gill nets can cause to all fish including game fish like stripers, crappie, and bass. I think in the end a letter will have to be written and people can just print out and sign or just sign multiple signatures on the same letter. To remove gill nets a large number of people will have to sign, and also be willing to go to a TWRA commission meeting. I will send my personal email though.

I am with you all on that about the nets, They are devastating to all fish, They need to outlaw them. I caught & RELEASED this fish a couple of years ago (49 1/2" 58 lbs) and want to be able to catch more of them. If they would get rid of the nets there would be a lot more like this. If you want to get something done you need to talk to the TWRA commissioners they are the people who can make it happen, but they are very sympathetic to the commercial fisherman.
