This subject may have been covered before but I would like to know what you guys think would be best, the EFI or Optimax. It seems I'd have to pay around $3000 more for the Optimax than the EFI and I'm told the advantage is the Optimax is much better on fuel. I'd appreciate your thoughts on this. Thanks.

Have owned both. The Opti will definitely get much better fuel mileage vs the EFI. As a result, the Opti will consume less oil. You will also notice there is little or no smoke with the Opti. Both are great engines IMO. Good luck whichever way you go.

I'm with Beetlespin! If your buying new, spring for the extended warranty.
You will love the milage- gas and oil! emoCool
And I've been an OMC man all my life!

Opti does get better fuel, but are ususally alot more expensive to repair. All the money you save on fuel will later go back into it when it is repaired. If you get the extened warranty, you shouldn't have any issues. I tend to like the EFI's better. But that is just my opinion.

I humorously stated E-Tec as another option.
Great engine.
Cranks on the first try every time and great gas mileage.
My 225 E-Tec came with a "7" year warranty.
Not bad in my opinion.
Does EFI or Optimax have the same 7 years on the warranty?
To Carl Guffey's reply, what does "can't keep the feet under them" mean.
Please reply as to what you mean to say.
I'm curious to what you mean between the lines.
Thank you,

Your reply of "Always one in the crowd...........".
I take that as a compliment.

I put in the E-Tec line as just another option in case a member needs another "opinion".
Anything to help each other.
Anything to save us some dollars in making the right decision before spending our Hard Earned Dollars.
The CFF is a great place to share opinions and make our fishing even better.
Thank you,

<font size="2">E-techs have a history of losing the lower units. The bearings are to small. Evinrude made the lower units much smaller on the e-tech to help improve fuel mileage. It worked, but there is a reason that they had to put a seven year warranty on the motor"to get people to buy it"</font>

Ive never owned a Merc .. every boat Ive ever owned has had a Johnson/Erude not what I picked just what came on the boat.. Ive never had any major problems that I couldnt fix on my own on a OMC product .. maybe Ive just been lucky ?
Merc seems to be the engine of choice round here .. up north you see more Erude/Johnson motors .. or at least you did back in the 80s when I last lived up there and pre Etec..
I have been looking at new motors my self .. or even newer motors .. Ive been told by several sources that mid 90s engines merc or erude hard to go wrong.. good solid engines .. but finding one not so easy lol
I really could personally care less which brand .. sorta like the age old ford vs chevy

I have a 200 3-litre merc on my xpress X-19 Tournament series. Full throttle it supposed to do 80 plus. Great motor , but I wished I would of gotten a 150 opti (I had my choice). I can watch the gas gauge go down and when I go to Nickajack it is 6 to 8 gallons of gas. I only go 4000 rpms or less.

JC,</p>

I thinks I am the last person on here that you need to preach that to. Do a search, see how many people that I have helped............... </p>

The question was between the optimax or EFI which is better. You just posted ETEC. Nothing else. So how is that helpful????????? THEN you post how "great"it was and the benefits. </p>

Thanks for the explanation.
I did not know feet meant lower unit.
Always learning
