Day #1 out of CFP for the 2020 CFF Classis
Ronnie and I thought it was going to be a tough day but we didn't know it was going to be as tough as it was. We fished hard all day long and I had two bites Ronnie had three. We came in with one small LM and one small Spot the weighed a combined 3.76 lbs. I think. It was terrible! We started out with top waters over and around the grass. We threw Spooks, hollow body frogs, Top Toads, buzz baits, Blade Walkers, spinner baits, and chatter baits, small, light Tx. rig worms and never got a sniff! I finally dot our LM on a big Bull Worm at the edge of a mat in some scattered grass. We moved out away from the grass edge and continued throwing worms hoping that would produce some fish. After another hour or so we moved on to some deeper water spots and threw shakey heads, Tx. rigs, a C rig, crank baits and jigs. We never got a bite. Finally we moved to a deep rocky bank and thought we would at least get four Spots there. Ronnie caught three but only one was 12 inches long! Tim Patterson and Will Roberson came with five keepers that weighed just over 15 lbs, and Mark Eustice and Ray Blaylock held down second place with five fish that was just over 10 lbs.
Day #2 out of Sullivan's on Nickajack
I got up, looked outside and it's raining again! That's great! After that debacle yesterday on the Chick, if I hadn't been carrying the weigh in scales I believe I would have gone back to bed and later watched football games and stayed home! But I met up with Ronnie and we took off to Sullivan's and decided that we were going to head up river for the day. We got to our first stop and started throwing shakey heads and jigs. After a while I set the hook on a big 'ol Drum. That caused a bit of excitement for a few minutes. A little later I set the hook again on a big Blue Cat. Then finally I caught a 16 in LM! We made a moved on further up river and we caught several small spots but none were 12 inches. We made two other moves and then Ronnie yells for the net. He has a very Nice 3.76 (I think) Spot. Then Ronnie boats a keeper LM. We made two other moves and then decided to start working our way back down the river. We stopped on a stretch of rocky bank and started throwing small Shakey heads and jigs. I catch another big Drum on a jig. After a short while Ronnie sets the hook on a big fish that runs him down into a brush top and finally breaks him off. That hurt bad! Then just minutes later he sticks another big fish that takes him down again a wraps him up in a tree limb. We tried for the longest to ease that fish out of there but finally it breaks off too. That hurt worse! By now we have lost a shoe box full of shakey heads in the rocks and brush with that current. But we went on and caught several more small Spots. Then Ronnie catches another keeper Spot to give us four fish. I then switched over to a jig and caught a LM to give us our five fish limit. Please note that Ronnie was using a spinning rod with the shakey heads and I was using a bait caster. Ronnie had five or six bites to my one with the spinning rod over my bait caster? We had just about thirty minutes remaining before we needed to head for the ramp when I picked up a crank bait and fired it up the river edge. This is on the first cast, I made about two turns on the reel handle and it loads up! Ronnie kept saying it was a big LM and hold him down! I had my doubts but after the battle we boated another big Drum! Just our luck! We boat all the trash fish and loose all the big Bass! We thought that our five fish was about 12-13 lbs. but at the weigh in we had just over 16 lbs. and surprisingly good for forth place with our 3.76 from the Chick on day #!. We had just over 20 lbs. total for the two day event and absolutely could not believe we got 4th place after such a bad day on the Chick. The big news of the day was Brian Elder (our new AOY) and Rusty White came in with a huge bag of over 26 lbs. and the big fish of the Tx. a LM that was just under 7 lbs. Tim and Will had another very good bag just over 16 lbs. for a second place finish. That's two years in a row for them finishing second in the Classic by the way. Mark and Ray had another five fish limit that put them over 20 lbs. for third place but I can't remember how much? Billy Campbell and Stephen Hall had a beautiful SM at 4.76 (I think) for the big SM money and Ronnie did get the big Spot money with his fish. I hope you all enjoyed the 2020 trail and had as much fun as I did! I hope to see you all in 2021! Complete results of the two days will be posted by Patrick this week.
