Espn reports Lane Kiffin to coach the vols

He will do much better than 6-6 or 5-7 each year. Our problem is offense, and he'll bring a fix. Jerry, please give me some reasoning behind your thoughts.

Very limited head coaching experience, no experience as a head coach on the college level, no name recognition to potential recruits, and no experience recruiting the South which means no high school network to draw from. Kiffen was the only person on Hamilton's radar. I guess Mike is due a mulligan because of his hire of Bruce Pearl. I just think that Tennessee, with it's vast resources, could've done better. I'll give the guy a chance.

Nick Saban had a first HC job too. Everyone does. Give the guy a chance. We all may be pleasantly surprised.

Everyone is making some fine points here. I think the main thing is getting someone with a fresh offensive perspective! The VOLS were ranked in the top 10 in defense at the end of this year and 116 in offense! I know people have a lot of well wishes and sympathy for TN homeboy Fullmer....especially with over 150 wins....but the guy has allowed himself to get stagnant over the past few seasons. You can't be that conservative all the time when you don't have the dream team players we once had. And when they do manage to have a lead, they drop into the prevent defense WAY to early. I'm convinced the prevent defense just prevents you from winning! It's funny that big Phil seemed to push all the blame towards the O coordinators and even replaced them...yet the plays remain the same? I know I was about 2 seconds from pulling an Elvis on my big screen every time they called a 2 yd. screen/flat pass when it was 3rd and 15! emoEnforce
I suppose I am to the point of wanting to see a fresh perspective to the game plan no matter who gets the job! emoGoofy

Looks like BPRICE was right.....

i am with Pointer on this on. I am going to keep on open mind but it really was a pick that does not make sense to me, at least for the money we are giving him. I am just leary because of no head coaching expirence. And i think Orgeron was a goon and the worst hire in college football history at Ole Miss. I hope he proves me wrong if he comes to TN but I am not sure he could coach his way out of a paper bag.

i just have the feeling we are going to suffer an Alabama-like coaching carousel.

Stoops was never a head coach and neither was Richt. They seem to be doing ok. I'm not overly crazy about the hire, but then again I wasn't real crazy about most of the candidates. I believe if he surrounds himself with a great staff, then the sky is the limit, but I can see where he could take that staff and head to the NFL in three years too.

There are exceptions to every rule. I am not saying he will not be a good one but the SEC is an awful big stage to have auditions!!!

What was a better solution? He's going to bring in Ed Ogeron (former ole miss HC), who wasn't much of a head coach, but was a fantastic recruiter... the proofs in the pudding now at Ole Miss. Also, David Reeves, South Carolina's recruiting coordinator will be brought on as QB coach. Whether it matters to some or not, South Carolina has has some nice classes recently. Its tough bringing kids to SoCar with the poor facilities they have. On top of this, look for Kiffin to keep Latrell Scott and Stan Drayton, the two driving forces behind our recruiting class this year. Recruiting is not going to be a problem. Watch, kids like Jarvis Giles will recommitt. I agree with DK, I think we will be pleasently surprised. Hamilton knows what he is doing... people screamed and hollered about the Bruce Pearl hire, now look at where we are.

I am not sure that there was a better option without dropping some ungodly cash. I am not downing the guy, i really hope he does a good job. From what i have read he may be bringing in a awesome supportting cast around him.

I don't think that Pearl's situation was anywhere near the same though. (I liked the Pearl hire by the way.) Pearl came to a program with no history of winning at least not recently. And also Pearl had been a head coach that has NEVER had a losing record at any level.

Let me say for the record, that I'm a Tennessee guy first and a Phil Fulmer guy second. Just because Fulmer's gone, doesn't mean I will no longer pull for the Vols. This hire is intriguing to say the least. Time will tell. It'll be interesting to see how many commits remain commited and what kind of class UT signs after all this.
