Best thing for fire ants or yellow jackets is gasoline. Find the yellow jack hole, there is always 2 of them. Wait until dark and pour about a pint in each hole. No more yellowjackets. With the fireants just take a gas can and kick the nest real good and step back. When the nest is good and covered with the ants pour some gas on them. They will die instantly. Make sure to do this on every fire ant hill in the yard. You will most likely have to do it two times in a year as they make tunnels between hills and there are always a few left.
I have tried all of the poisons and evenhired pest control people but nothing beats regular unleaded. Even at today's prices the gas is also way cheaper than anything else. Just don't be smoking when you do this.

Thanx // I did try gasoline, and boiling hot water .. the gas seemed to do better .. but was sorta fun thinking about those suckers cooking away lol. I just thought might be a better solution less toxic to the ground

The key to using gas is to get the nest stirred up and wait until the ground is black with the ants. If you just pour it on the hill you only get the ones on the very top. Gasoline has never harmed the ground at my house. The grass grows and is green and keeps us very busy mowing it. I am not talking about a tanker truck here. A gallon of gas will destroy 8 or 10 small to medium mounds.

cheez is right use some gas, sean. My mom had fire ants build a mound in the middle of her driveway and I doused it with gas.
Took a shovle to the mound dumped gas on it and the next day any that were left had packed up and moved elsewhere. Within a few days
it rained and washed any remains of the mound off the drive and into the grass, everything seemed to be back to normal minus the ants

As Cheeze says, be sure and kick the top of the mound off, the many millions down below will get the message and come to the rescue of the ones on top, wait untill the masses arrive and then pour the gas on them. A garden sprayer works wonders with the gas and it goes a lot furthur.

I didn't even think about a garden sprayer. That is a great idea. Just as long as you don't leave the gas in it and your wife sprays her roses with it.

gas works well, i use that method too. whats kind of fun though if you're a bit of a pyro.. i lined the hill with bricks, and wet the grass on the other side, poured lots of gas, let it soak in, then threw a match. fire will burn up through the holes, its kinda fun. the grass will grow back, just don't get real close, and have the hose ready just in case. though gas alone is much safer and probably a much better idea. i also enjoy using firecrackers. doesn't kill the ants, only a few at a time, but i had fun doing it as a kid.

Gas works great but kills everything, like your lawn too. If you want something a bit less toxic try Amdro Fire Ant Killer. You just sprinkle a little of it on top and in a couple of days the whole mound is dead.

Get you some Liquid Sevin, mix it at 1 pint to 5 gallons of water in a bucket. Take a stick poke a hole in the center of the mound as deep as you can get it. Pour the mixture into the hole fairly slowly. You will get the queen and the mound will die. Plus no chance of fireworks, EPA issues or dead spots in the yard. You can use just about any over the counter insecticide for this, but if you buy it a any of the box stores, double or triple the rate on the label. There rates are set by lawyers not by science. Killing the Queen is the goal to ridding the area of ants. Plus the liquid Sevin is a good grub killer and will aid in your mole control, as well if sprayed over the entire yard once every two months controls, ticks, fleas, spiders and multiple other insects.

Working at the golf course, it's a daily battle with the fire ants. They make a poison that you just shake out a bit on the mound and they are dead and gone within a day or two. They take the tainted "food" and carry it to the heart of the nest and they die.... I know that pouring gas on them works, no doubt, did it as a kid. But 1. Gas is expensive. 2. It's not good to be pouring gas onto the ground.... but I'm sure the poison iis just as bad.... good luck NRG. Go get 'em. BTW, they sell fire ant killer and bee killer at Lowe's. Bought three cans of bee killer for $1.50/bottle last week.

I have 23 nests in my yard , I found 2 the hard way this weekend .. stepped in them, and ouch they hurt , and dang the itch lasts for days .. how do you get rid of these things !! , And I have a yellow jackets nest some where by my side porch, just cant find the dang hole to put them down for good, I bet Ive spent hours trying to fig out where the hole for those bees is ! The are down in the grass some where .. when ever I think I found em .. nope that aint it !

We may have spellcheck BR, but READ check has yet to be invented!!!! Lookie here....he said he has yella jackets. Those are bees ain't they?!?!?!?!?!!? emoScratch

I like to take a rod push it down the center and kisk the top of the hill off and opout down the hole and through the top, just don't let the feds see you, highly illegal and I heard that the EPA sometimes uses scans to see if gas is used in agricultral places... at least that what an agri ext. agent said
