Instant grits works great.
I used all the other options in FL, but the grits did well and no eviron probs.
pour a small line to encircle the nest and DO NOT DISTURB them.
The grits are taken in ala the ortho deal and when eaten water intake causes them to swell and break open the chitin (exoskeleton) of the ants and kills them

I like the cheese grits best quaker

And you always have breakfast as an alternative when all your ants die out

When in Texas we cleared 3 acres of fire ants by using a spreader for 2 different types of ant killer. My wife took a Master Gardener class where they explained which 2 products to use. First, like Amdro type(spelling?) which is a relatively fast killer and another one (name forgotten) that was slow killer. The problem with gasoline (et. al.) is it doesn't go sideways as some tunnels do and it's bad for the environment as residuals get into the water systems. Another problem with fire ants as more than one queen can be in the nests and if disturbed may spread even further (i.e. pocking a stick in the nest.

Yellow jackets are hornets and nest in the ground so you have to find the entrance (hard to do) for most of the effective sprays, etc.

Amdro ant block will 100% get rid of all your ant problems. You can get it at Lowes. Just sprinkle a 6-12" band around your house and yard and in about 2 days you will not have any ants and it works for about 2-3 months.

IF YOU HAVE 2 HILLS CLOSE TOGETHER HAVE A FRIEND GET 1 SHOVEL AND YOU WITH THE OTHER SWAP TOP OF ANT HILLS THEY ARE TWO DIFFERENT COLONIES AND WILL WAGE WAR BETWEEN EACH OTHER THE NEXT DAY YOU WILL NOT SEE ANY ANTS FROM THE TWO HILLS BUT BE CAREFUL AND WATCH WHERE YOU STEP BECAUSE THERE WILL BE LITTLE WHITE CROSSES AND BLOOD EVERY WHERE
