ANYBODY GOT A GOOD FISHING LOG SET UP ON YOUR COMPUTER ?? I`VE LOOKED AT SOME ONLINE BUT MOST HAVE A LIMITED USAGE BEFOR YOU HAVE TO PAY FOR THEM.
iVE BEEN TRYING TO SET SOMETHING UP ON MS-WORKS STUFF AND GOT A DATABASE SOMETHING LIKE I LIKE BUT IT WON`T CONFIGURE JUST HOW I WANT IT TO FIT ACROSS ONE PAGE.
IF YOU CAN SHOW ME WHAT YOUR USING OR A LINK TO A FREE DOWNLOADABLE AND ADJUSTABLE CUSTOMIZABLE LOG .. I`D APPRECIATE IT

A good ole fashion 5 subject note book! Thats what I use. Of course, all of the pages are still blank since I never catch any fish!emoBang emoLaugh

Guys,

I have a friend that lives in MN. He's sort of a programmer has has created, what I think to be one kick butt Fishing Log. This is a program that he plans on marketing one day and I think it will do very well.

Per our conversation a few minutes ago, Scott or "Bassfishingnerd" will be putting up a link for a free copy of this program. All he ask is that you critique it and give he or I some feedback. (Please keep in mind that he is still building it) But most of the main features are working.

Please check back in this thread for his post.

Btw..when he moves back down here..ya'll be fishing for second...LOL! Just kiddin

I've been keep a log since 1990 using MS Word. Just go fishing then come home and type in how bad you did, the water temp. , how hard the wind blew and all the rude people on the lake. Ain't nothing to it. emoLaugh Just open up MS Word, name your document and then just type in your fishing information, date it and then save it.

I barely have the time to post reports here, so I use CFF for my fishing log and try to post almost every trip. I search past fishing reports by species and because the results have a date in the subject line I can see what was happening the same time last year. I know one species/pattern from a past report that may just turn-on New Years Day of this year...May just plan a trip around it.

CFF works well for me but it does not have granular detailed resolution on patterns as most personal logging software you can purchase. What matters is the amount of data you have to pull from. With personal logging applications you only have your own data to analyze. With CFF you get to derive info from a fairly large repository of reports accumulated by those who have contributed to the archives. So with a bit of searching, reading, and research one can locate some seasonal patterns (and maybe a few specific locations to fish) and see what was working well at a similar time last year. I have done this for stripers to see what time they turned on last Spring...

The resolution to see certain patterns through searches is dramatically improved when members Format their Fishing Report Subject lines with "LAKE AREA-SPECIES-DATE" to help organize them better.

Here is how I use it:
I enter a keyword like crappie
I then select "Fishing Reports" as the forum to search from the left
I then select how far in history in the database I want to go back
If the report subject lines are formatted properly as mentioned above you should be able to quickly identify a report of interest. I can also refine my searches by adding additional keywords like chester frost.

That's basically the best CFF site software can offer. This database search functionality is one of the main reasons I always encourage posting fishing reports...to ultimately build a long-term repository of info that everyone can benefit from. As reports increase on CFF the better resolution its database will have on predicting future patterns and what worked well in the past.

Note that any logging software is only as good as the data you put into it and the amount of time it takes to retrieve, analyze, and then project that data for future trips. If I were to use a personal application I would choose one by these standards.

Greetings everyone. I'm the notorious guy Billy is talking about. :)

Here is the zip file of the current version of the program.

http://63.84.1.8/scott/fishinglog2006.zip

You can get WinZip or a few other tools to get this on your computer. If many of you are interested, I will create an "installer" for it to make it a bit easier for the technically challenged.

You will need the .NET framework 2.0 installed before running the program:

I appreciate any feedback you guys can provide! :)

I took a look at a few of the programs listed above and then decided to do a few screen shots of what Scott has put together.

The data is EASY to fill out plus when you collect enough, you can look at your top 5 lures and the moon phases that did the best for you.

One thing I would like to have is to see a break down or report for season and maybe weather conditions. Most likely a way to tweek what reports you want to have by choosing certain fields. Maybe in the future?

Heres the link to the screen shots

I only keep records on Crappie and Stripers, the two fish that I mainly fish for. I keep an Excel file on them. On the Crappie worksheet, I have the date, # Crappie(caught on this date), YTD (total), Hrs fished, Location, Moon Phase. I usually insert a comment in one of the columns and list all the pertinent info. Conditions, who I fished with, best lures and colors, etc. I only record legal sized Crappie. I don't ever record the undersized fish, so I really don't know how many of those fish that I have caught.

On the Striper record, I have the date, # Stripers caught, YTD (total) and Moon Phase. I also insert a comment with any info that is out of the ordinary such as how many smallmouth that I catch, drum (what else), white bass, sauger, etc. Best lure for the day.emoGeezer

I agree with keeping a log and recording stuff but when it comes to writing and entering stuff on computer...I get LAZY!

Check out Scotts program. I think you'll be surprised how he seemed to merge allot of the features others have in a simple entry format.

DK..Maybe you have mentioned something to consider! Why should most programs be for bass only. Why not a multi species program? maybe a check mark for that type of fish! Thanks!!!

'The Fishing Log' is off to a good start. I can offer a few suggestions that would increase ease of use, for me anyways, and offer more options for data analysis.

Add a 'Tacklebox' (tab or button) where the angler can build/edit a virtual tackle selection by entering lure make, type, size, depth, color, and trailer. On the Fish Entry / Notes tab, give the angler access to their 'tacklebox' via picklists or pulldown lists. That'll eliminate a lot of typing - and typos. By using a picklist you'll ensure that data is reliably entered, and can use the data in statistics and trend analysis.

The structure type, bottom type, and cover type (vegetation/wood) should be available as a picklist or pulldown list on the Fish Entry / Notes tab (per fish), rather than on the Location / Conditions tab.

As an added feature, I wouldn't mind the option to enter latitude/longitude and water depth for each entry on the Fish Entry / Notes tab.

Ditto to what HangnMoss posted. It is an excellent log and a little tweaking to make cross-referencing easier and errors less likely would make it a good buy.

I LIKE SCOTTS SETUP AS GOOD AS ANY AND BETTER THAN MOST AND HAVE BEEN INTO SEVERAL MORE.....NOW IS IT GOING TO GO AWAY AFTER 30 DAYS
WHAT REALLY GRIPES ME IS THEY SAY FREE AND AFTER DOWNLOADING A WHOLE BUNCH OF STUFF I`M UNSURE OF TO MAKE THEM WORK( .NET FRAMEWORK AND THE .MDB FILE EXT. STUFF AND WORD VIEWER AND ETC.) AND THEN YOU GET IT ALL LOADED AND WORKING AND IS SAYS IT`S FREE FOR 30 DAYS. ONE THE PRO`S ARE ALL SUPPOSED TO BE USING WAS LIKE THAT ...PROBABLY TOOK ME AN HOUR TO LOAD UP ALL THE STUFF TO MAKE IT WORK AND THEN IT SAYS IT`S GOOD FOR 30 DAYS
I THINK SCOTTS IS THE BEST FOR WHAT I`M WANTING TO TRACK..THANKS

AND THANKS TO ALL FOR THE SUGGESTIONS !!!

BY THE WAY I WASN`T FUSSIN` ABOUT THE .NET FRAMEWORK FOR YOURS SCOTT.....I HAD ALREADY LOADED IT FOR ANOTHER ONE PREVIOUSLY....
AGAIN THANKS FOR YOUR WORK

I appreciate all the feedback. It will take some time to integrate some of these, but I will work on it the next few weeks and see what I can get changed. I did keep the program as species neutral as possible. Another thing to keep in mind, is that the fish/lure/color and those things autofill after you get a few entered. Everything possible auto-fills in the program. I'm sure most of you don't have enough in there to see that yet.

My software is not going away after 30 days. :D

After I get all the bugs worked out, everyone who participated in testing will get a free copy after I make it public. :)

YOU A GOOD MAN SCOTT...THANKS FOR THE HARD WORK...IF I FIND ANYTHING SPECIFIC TO SUGGEST I`LL PM YOU !! I THINK IT`S PRETTY GOOD AS IT IS !!

Scott, thank you very much for making this resource available. I was wondering if it would be feasible to include a field under the "Fish Entry / Notes" tab where the number of a particular species caught on a particular lure could be entered. For example, if I am lucky enough to catch 8 Largemouth on a chrome/blue rattle trap, and 2 on a black/blue jig I could make 2 entries for the 10 fish. As it is now, it appears that I would have to make 10 entries to get the fish count to reflect the number of fish caught. Hope you all have a very Merry Christmas!

I downloaded it and look forward to using it. Can't wait to see the updates you make. When you make them is it going to be a simple upgrade, maintaining the data already put in? It would be a real pain to have spent a couple months doing input and then lose it on an upgrade. Nice program so far!emoThumbsup
