FISHING LOGS

Chattanooga Fishing Forum

Help Support Chattanooga Fishing Forum:

I am going to try to retain most of the database format if at all possible. I could upgrade your database if you enter alot of data. I have been doing some testing today for some of the options and I hope to get something out before the first of the year.

Thanks!
Scott

Hey Scott, thanks for joining up and sharing the program with the members here at CFF. I've kept this program a secret but its great getting to hear some feedback on what could make this program even better. You do a great job there Bud! Thanks for sharing!!!</p>

Now..on to this moving thing...

Do I need to send that U-Haul truck up soon or what?

Diane reminded me that we have family located on dry land. I had almost forgot that since the purchase of the Stratos!!! <font size="2">(note to self: enter GPS coordinates for house where family is)

HangnMoss,

The virtual tacklebox is a neat idea, however it introduces a dilemma when it comes to "input" since I don't want to restrict everything to a dropdown, since I know that I like to enter free-form text for some things, including lures, sizes, and colors. Like I said in an earlier post, I do have autofill for everything in there, so that will help with the typos and such.

I am also trying to keep it as species neutral as possible, since not everyone fishes for bass. :)

I will certainly add things such as GPS coordinates and some of the other things you would like to see in the schema. I am going to add a toolbar at the bottom with buttons to hide/show the columns in the fish entry that you do or do not want to see, since I like some of the columns, but not others. The default will be all on, but can be turned off selectively, and it will be saved the next time you open the program.

Thanks for the great feedback!
Scott

Eh, I like dropdowns. Autofill works great when you don't have 100 very similar entries. emoPoke

Select once by a 'friendly description' and everything else is filled in automatically; lure make, type, depth, size, color, etc. Saves typing if you're like {guess who} and have Bandit crankbaits in 6 sizes, 12 depth ranges, and 483 color patterns. Ok, I may have stretched that a little...

Start a poll and ask the masses. There may be enough division to warrant two versions - one with a tacklebox and one that's totally freeform. While you're at it, poll the masses on a whether or not a PPC version would be well-received. I know I'd use it.

For the rest of CFF, care to {guess who} I was referring to when I mentioned the bandit selection? emoLaugh

I have not downloaded the log yet but will. I am hoping that someone will make a program where large groups of fishermen can take the info from their logs and upload it to a program that will make it accessable to the group. It would be great if we as a forum could get a program and send all of our info to a central location so that we could access it. Is that possible for your program bassfishingnerd ? I know that it might be less profitable to do it that way but it would be the most functional for a large group like we have.

CFF Fishing Reports is a central location where anglers can share and access all their reports - just copy/paste or summarize your log/report and you have shared it with the masses and also made a contribution to the site! I realize it does not have all the granular drop-downs and search capabilities as custom personal software, however uploading and sharing consolidated fishing report data in a quick and simple user interface is the primary intent behind why CFF was created. I hope everyone who decides to use personal logging software will continue to fuel the site and post reports on CFF emoSmile

I would like see a way to put length in as less than limit Like less than 14 or 12 14 or 12-14or less than whatever the legal length limit is.I don't think many will measure fish that are not almost the limit.

I do thank you again DHaun for the ability to look at other people's catches and techniques, this forum has been great for that. To take that info and crunch the numbers and look at the data objectively would be nice to be able to do in a format like some of the fishing logs do. If that were possible for the forum it would make the info just that much more accessable.

The Fishing Log stores it's data in an MS Access database file, same as this site. It'd be fairly simple to write a web-based frontend to access the data, allowing a mered logfile to be viewed here. The bad news is that someone would end up with the dirty job of maintaining the database...

Not to mention my schema changes could affect it too. I am considering moving the backend over to SQL Express edition instead due to technical limitations of Access, which I can't stand using most of the time. SQL Express is easier to maintain from my point of view, but complicates the software installation.

Stay tuned. :)

What I would like to see is for us to collect better data on weight, length, general location caught, for additional info for TWRA.  The TWRA is collecting data that will result in decisions that will affect all of us.  Right now, the main decision as to the creel limits on the Chickamauga tailwaters will be based on 3 electroshocking studies.  Any additional information, however anecdotal, should help our Region III Biologists make the best decisions to improve our Smallmouth fishery.  Who knows, we may be able to increase the average size of our spot population with some carefully crafted slot limits. It doesn't seem right to me that the waters below Nickajack Dam seem to produce some really nice spots (hybrids?) while we hardly ever get a spot below Chickamauga exceeding 3 - 3 1/2 lbs.  Plus, so far this fall, I have yet to see a report of a Smallmouth exceeding 6 lbs.

You make a great point MB that I believe emphasizes the importance of sharing reports on CFF. I think it is really great that you have TWRA involved! CFF fishing report data can be collected by TWRA and used to improve conservation, which can lead to a better fishery for us all.

I have "heard" of a 6+ smallmouth and a 10 lb largemouth caught below Chickamauga Dam this year. Unfortunately they will not be considered in any TWRA data provided by CFF since they were never reported. It takes time to login and complete a report, but I think CFF makes it as simple as possible to quickly post a report with its basic interface. I think if CFF had a busy user interface with lots of drop-downs and numerous questions to answer it would reduce the number of reports posted on the site as it could greatly increase the work & time necessary to generate a report. There are many days I just want to take nap after getting the boat put away so I prefer to post reports as quickly as I can.

My philosophy is the more anglers that we can encourage to participate on CFF sharing reports the better data we will have, so I think that process should be as quick and simple as possible. A data entry resource can always go through the reports on CFF and consolidate/format them in a spreadsheet for better organization and manipulation of data for use by TWRA but we need a high volume of reports to start with in order to get a good representation of data.

I have mostly thought about this platform as sharing reports to help each other become better anglers but I have since been educated that fishing reports on CFF can also improve conservation and may actually help to improve our fishery based on how it is used by TWRA.

I encourage everyone visiting and reading the information CFF has to offer to sign-up and share your fishing reports! emoThumbsup

I`ll give it a look ......do you think you`ll have many more changes......just asking so I`ll hold hold off doing a complete redo of my records....I`m wanting to go back for the last year of club tourneys while I can remember....
one thing i thought might help me is a way to paste in a small map section to mark where we caught fish or as an attachment....maybe in the corner of the general notes

THANKS FOR THE EXTRA WORK SCOTT....I LIKE YOUR LOG BETTER THAN ANY I`VE SEEN AND WILL BE HAPPY WITH WHATEVER YOU COME UP WITH FOR A FINAL VERSION...
I KNOW WE HAVE THROWN OUT SOME IDEAS FOR YOU AND YOUR TRYING TO MAKE SOME OF THEM WORK AND I PERSONALLY APPRECIATE YOUR EFFORTS.
I`M NOT IN THAT BIG OF A HURRY MYSELF FOR A FINISHED PRODUCT...SO AS FAR AS I`M CONCERNED TAKE YOUR TIME AND GET IT RIGHT AND DON`T TRY TO KILL YOURSELF IN THE PROCESS....

AFTER ALL IT THE HOLIDAYS !!!!

AND HAVE A HAPPY NEW YEAR !!

Thanks Snuffy!

I spent last winter here in Minnesota creating the thing in the first place. :) We just got 6 inches of snow today, but I hope to hit the 'sippi Thursday, since it's mid-30's for highs. :) The river is open all year (powerplant) and we usually whack the smallies all winter until the season closes. I should have time to work on it again this week.

Happy new year all!
