David, what is up with folks? 274 views and only 70 responses. Can't they at least make one little click and be done?emoGeezer

I know it DK...The way I see it not voting at all is the same as a vote for not having posted a report this year. Some of those views may also be non-members who cannot vote simply checking out the results.

Regardless, the poll has achieved what I was after and I plan to leave it up for a few more days. I have always been curious and I now have a much better estimate of the percentage of members who contribute to keeping CFF online - I also know who each of those members are. I (and I'm sure many others) certainly appreciate their reports and efforts to participate in the primary focus of this site.

If CFF Fishing Reports ever "go private" as some have recommended in the past, I will use this data to be sure that they are only visible to the members who contribute reports to the site.

Until then, if members/lurkers gain anything useful from visiting CFF then I request that you post a fishing report in return.

The poll DK that is referring is located here:

David, I don't post every time i go fishing, but I try to report as often as I can.I try to look at reports every couple of days. I think this is my 100th post, I am not a big poster, but try to hang in there. I like the forum and meeting members on the water.

THANKS
Barry Langstaff "Tileman"

I'm sure that the lurkers won't like it if we ever go private, but I'm sure that there will be a way for them to join and become a contributor to the site. There is still a lot of "I'm not going to give away my secret technique, spot, etc" which I would like to see disappear. If folks only knew how much more you receive when you give, then this wouldn't be such a problem. emoGeezer

It's a shame that the poll didn't get more response than it did. I'll make this comment, don't want anyone to get mad, but Cheez hit it on the head the other day. You can go to the effort of sharing your info in a fishing report but it is amazing at the lack of response you get. A lot of people see it but very few bother to thank you for it. I used to do a report every time I went out on the water but honestly don't anymore unless it is something unusual. My reason is simple; I'd often sit down and write a long report only to come back a few hours later and see it had no comments, thank yous, or anything else. I still enjoy reading reports and usually try to say something postive to the poster to let them know I appreciate the time they are taking to share something back to the forum. More people are receiving information than sharing it now, and while it's always been that way it seems more pronounced now.

I may not comment on every report I see, but I always read them. It can be useful information on any species. I always read your reports Fishin Fool, and please don't stop posting, because you always have good reports. There are some very worthy posts and usually the same people post them. I try to help by posting what works for me, and have also picked up some great tips off other members. So please post reports, because it is amazing at how many ways there are to catch them.

FF, I try to thank as many as possible for their reports but admit I always do not have the time. I am super busy with my work, so maybe the moderators and other active members can help with that some. I notice that many try their best to respond to posts but it can't happen all the time with this level of activity. A small thanks is something most anglers would express if you shared a report face to face or over the phone but it takes more effort to type that out in a post. However, the thanks also comes in a different form of helping to keep this site online - thats the point I want to get across.

Based on the poll there are about 80 report contributors on CFF. That's really a fine number of participants for a site like this when you think about the amount of cumulative useful information that gets posted. I am very happy about this level of participation and we already have 20 reports posted just today which is awesome! That's way more than I ever expected when this site was started 2 years ago.

However, relative to the number of overall visitors and total members reading and making non-report posts its somewhat of a disappointment that can be improved on.

CFF is like public radio and needs to be rallied every so often, which is why I like to take the time to remind everyone of why CFF exists and what it takes to keep it online. I am really looking to encourage the "silent members" of CFF to step-up and post.

If you are a "silent member" (that's currently fishing) and you derive any useful info from CFF please pitch in and post your reports to help keep it going!

I try to post every trip, but I'm currently laid up due to some complications during a simple surgery. After being stuck at home for a couple of weeks, I *would* like to extend a great big thanks to everyone that has been posting reports and keeping the board active. This board is as close as I can get to being on the water right now, and I don't think I could ever express in words just how much I appreciate this community. Thanks DHaun for the resource, and thanks to everyone that contributes and keeps the board active.

BBass and I have this conversation all the time. It just seems that less and less people post reports anymore. I honestly think I have posted a report all but 1 time I have gone fishing this year. If didn't at least the person I went with did. Crap, even when I have more or less gotten shut out I post a report. That's what keeps this site going and I am 100% behind what this site stands for!! It has brought me to a great bunch of people and I have made some great freinds that I will have the rest of my life! That means the world to me. Fishinfool, I understand what you mean about people giving thanks for leaving a report. I myself will make an effort to thank more of the people who leave the reports. emoAngel

I certainly didn't mean to imply that I won't leave reports. I'll sure do it as long as the forum is around. I enjoy doing it and I enjoy reading everyone else's posts also. Like someone said earlier, if you can't get out on the water (which sometimes I can't) the forum is the next best thing to being there. I've learned a heck of a lot just reading what some of these very inventive people come up with to catch fish. This place is a gem and could even be better if some of the silent folks would just post. It doesn't have to be about a trophy bass either! I like hearing that someone is CATCHING something period!emoParty

I guess I have to fess up...I read more than I post! I could say I don't post most of my trips fishing because I fish 80 to 90% ponds here in the Pikeville-Dayton area. I guess thats really a cop-out, so I resolve to make more reports regardless of where I fish. And I'll be sure to thank folks more for their very helpful Tips and reports!! I have learned an unbelievable amount of imformation from my fellow members. One thing I do to help is to imform all my fishing buddies about this invaluable website. I couldn't really begin to guess how many i've told(*some several times)! Now i'm off to the fishing report to tell of my trip to a new pond on Dayton Mt. this evening. Once again THANK YOU ONE & ALL who have contributed in any way to this great site!!

Im new and this will be my first post. I fish mostly on the Chick with my 4yr old son. The fishery here in the Tennessee Valley is outstanding. Mostly fish for bass and cats. Lots of great info on this site and have put more fish in the boat because of it. Info that has takes lots of folks years of fishing is excesible in an evening of reading which is where i think caution should be taken. The road to out-of-staters and overcrowded fishing holes is a bumpy one. On the other hand with more people fishing and increases in licsense sales more money is available to improve our fishery. Double edge sword. Lots of water out there still and plenty of room but that could change with the info being available on the internet. Think about it: 5-28 twenty boats at the nuke. Double that to forty and that section of the river is very difficult for the weekend boaters to navigate, especially at the wide open speeds they like to run there. How does the twra or the powers that be fix the problem when enough people complain or if there is a couple of serious accidents? Where's the milfol. Ever been to Arkansas to duck hunt? Ever have to go to a drawing to hunt of fish in a duck blind or section of river? Just a few things to think about. Protecting what we have is im sure a high priority on all of our minds. To much info can lead to bad things as well.

Take a kid hunting of fishing.

Drumking you bring out some good points. All the responses have brought out good points in them. I can only speak for myself. Lord knows I don't get to fish like I used to or like I want to but sometimes you just have to buckle down and work for a living.

I try to leave a report when I do get to go and try to read most all the reports and commentsand sometimes get to respond. Don't always get to but I try to.

This goes back to a conversation that has sprang up many times on here. Whether having the "open" or "closed" forums. Members or non-members and so on. Here lately there has been a lot of just visiting and voiceing opinions and stuff but that comes with the forum. I for one am VERY glad that Dhaun has allowed this forum to go on and remain an open forum for all to visit and to learn from. This has become a widely viewed and read forum and that just shows that folks are interested in whats going on. Like many others I wish some of the folks would just loosen up and post reports and not worry about whether someone knows where they fish or not.

Like has been said before. You don't have to get personal about the exact area or the exact spot but different things work at different parts of the lake in the same day.

The info to share is what you caught fish on and maybe just the general area of the lake or river you are fishing. What was the water temps? Was it dingy from excess boat traffic or rain or was it clear? What colors worked for you? was there a lot of big fish or just keepers or slicks?

Info don't have to be really specific. All David has asked is to share your experiences and what works for you at the time. Thats not a lot to ask for to have a place like this to come to and share time with friends and learn for FREE.

Oh well, I better shush.

Thats my $.10 worth.( Cost of living raise you know))

You know, they say that 10% of the fishermen catch 90% of the fish.

I suspect a similar ratio will always hold true for Internet report postings as well.

This is DHaun's baby to do with as he pleases, but please don't ever go "private."

Hagen made a valid point I have thought about numerous times. Too much information can lead to additional fishing pressure and crowded fishing holes. The number of tournaments promoted on the site also leads to increased participation and more fishing pressure.

However, good information is what gets visits to a website. The more visitors on CFF the more influence our posts will have. I hope for that to be a positive influence. CFF serves as a platform to educate anglers on creel limits, conservation, threats to area fishing, and safety. It provides a medium for anglers to meet and organize where the information they post has influence on the many readers. It provides a place where anglers can interact and provide data back to TWRA hopefully enhancing conservational efforts. CFF members have also organized many charitable contributions. I believe the positives currently outweigh the negatives on the double edge sword.

Exact locations in fishing reports have never been requested but if an angler finds that "their" fishing hole has been compromised or is overcrowded due to a specific report on CFF they can always PM me and I will modify the post as necessary. In 2 years I have never received a complaint like that, but the potential negative impacts of "too much information" is the primary reason why I have considered making fishing reports "private". If members believe that CFF can have a detrimental effect on area fishing then I can always make this information private only visible to the 10% or so of members who contribute.

I agree Dhuan. This is a great medium for all the points you listed and heck i just like looking at the pictures. emoToast
