There have been several questions about the lures used to catch gar, and since I made a couple today I thought I'd put up a pic.

I cut the hook off of a "keeper" style jig head (it has a barb to hold the plastic swimbait body in place) just behind the barb. I wrapped the jig with thread, tied it off, and put a little glue on it. This will hold the nylon in place. Next I unraveled about 5" of a soft braided nylon rope (3/8" diameter) and split it into two and used half per jig so the lure wouldn't be too bulky looking. I held this in place and tightly wrapped more thread over the nylon strands until it was quite solid, tied it off, and put a fair amount of glue (household cement) on the wrapping to secure everything. The nylon strands get wrapped in the gar's teeth and it can't get away! I would suggest a short length of heavier leader so the gar doesn't cut it.

Thanks goes to rsimms for teaching me this one!!!!!!

rsimms showed me. Pry the mouth open and hold it there with a wood wedge and then use a pliars to untangle the nylon. It's a bit of a job LOL! Gloves are a REALLY good idea.

Yep, kind of a jerky motion will keep it within a foot or two of the surface. You can make them without any weight too, and shoot them like shooting a dock (slingshot).

That looks great Eric. I know that similar lures are used when fishing for barracuda too. The lures that I have seen in the past that were "rope lures" were either pink or chartreuse. Do you plan to dye the lures or keep them traditional white?

Might try just using some permanent markers to add color, rather than go to any actual dyeing method. Stripe in some red for that bleed effect!

I hadn't thought about dying them. I know what Dickey would do!!!!!!!!

WWDD. He would dye part of the strands chartreuse, and a few strands red. That's what Dickey would do. emoBigsmile emoUpsmile emoGeezer

Thanx for the info Eric! .... how do you get this lure out of the gar's mouth?

Lipping them is definitely out of the question, emoLaugh emoLaugh my luck he'd bite through the wood and get me
