CRABTREE FARMS IN CHATTANOOGA
Crabtree Farms is a research and educational project promoting sustainable agriculture. Covering 22 acres, it is located in the Clifton hills neighborhood near downtown Chattanooga, Tennessee.
In 1998 Will and McNair Bailey started Crabtree Farms of Chattanooga, Inc. The farm property has been in agricultural use since the early 1800s. In 1997 the property was donated to the City of Chattanooga by the Crabtree and McGauley families, with coordination assistance by Bobby Davenport of The Trust for Public Land. A stipulation of the donation is that the property must retain its agriculture heritage. The City leases the land to Crabtree Farms for $1 per year.
Crabtree Farms hosts, on-site, a 1 acre Community Garden. The Community Garden has 41 plots available for rental to the community. Launched in 2001, the Community Garden is open to all ages and gardening levels. For a one-time seasonal fee, each gardener rents a 200 sq. ft. plot and is provided access to tools, compost and water. Staff members and volunteers work with gardeners to share planting tips and organic gardening techniques .
Many varieties of vegetables, herbs and flowers are planted by the gardeners. The rental fee is $90 for a full plot or $50 for a half plot for the 2008 season.
The garden is the largest Community Garden open to the public in Chattanooga. It is organic, meaning only natural pest control may be applied. Plots are tilled at the beginning of the season, and all other work is performed by the Gardeners.
There's also a WorkShare Program which offers the opportunity to volunteer at Crabtree farms in exchange for the Community Garden fee. The program's season is March 1 - November 29, 2008.
The WorkShare Program requires a donation of 24 volunteer hours during the nine months of the Community Garden season. The volunteer time can be spent at special events, in the greenhouse, in the office, out in the field, etc. The staff will work with you to determine opportunities for you. You will receive a monthly volunteer email outlining specific opportunities that need volunteers.
Crabtree Farms has a full calendar of activities that are good, healthy, fun, family oriented. Visit their calendar at Crabtree events.
