I finally had a good reason to run 50 miles in the boat so I thought it would be a great time to check the gas mileage and with it hovering at the 4 dollar mark for non ethanol premium I want the best I can get.
The run started with cool calm water(low 70s) and I cruised between 45 and 50 mph with a full tank of gas and full tournament load and my first run was steady without stoping. That was half the trip and my next run or final trip miles in rougher water and windy was stoping and starting to fish different areas on the way back to the original starting point so with all the starting at full load in mind you know your going to use more on the second half of the trip.

DRIVER 250 LBS
FULL TX LOAD ?? LBS
ALLISON 2003 XB / OMC TROLLING MTR
225 MARINER REBUILT LAST YEAR
CONVERTED TO CARBS

4.6 MILES PER GALLON...WITH THE JETS IN THE CARBS RUNNING A LITTLE RICH SO IT IS POSSIBLE TO DO A LITTLE BETTER

the 225 is doing less work to maintain speeds, therefore better mileage. My 150 at 55 gets around 2 miles per gallon......I feel y'alls pain. One day when I get over being cheap I will buy something with the new SHO Yami 4-stroke.

Dang, that's good for a 225hp, my 150hp Carb Yammie only gets 3 to 3 1/2 that's if I don't run WOT.

Yep I was a little surprised myself, that is what I was thinking I was getting until I actually ran it Saturday with a full tank for almost 50 miles and I stayed out of the throttle all day long, when I filled it back up it was 10 gallons. It might would have held another half gallon but I didn't want it running out the overflow vent. Even if it did hold anther half gallon or even a gallon it would still be around 4.3 to 4.5 mpg

My SHO just gets a little better than 5 grandpa-ing around but just drops to 4.5 at WOT. I made need to get rid of 500 pounds of lures that have never and will never get wet.

What size motor on what size boat?

Gas prices were one of the reasons I sold my boat. My boat would have required $41.63 to fill the two tanks.

Dang you must have 2 five gallon tanks for $41.63 to fill up

mine sucks I belive instead of miles per gallon mine is moore like 15 gallon per mile emoScratch

On Saturday I ran from the Charleston boat ramp down to the 58 bridge and back and burned over half a tank. 84 Bullet with a Merc 150 that smokes like I am burning coal in it!

A 250 on a Phoenix 921 (21'-6") Also a 26" Mercury Fury Prop

Thats not bad at all on a big boat like that. I'm planning on a 19' with a 225. So overall have you been pleased with the motor?

The SHO motors are the real deal. No better on gas mileage than a pro xs but they are great engines. The boat and setup has as much to do with gas mileage as the motor. An Allison or Bullet with get 20-40% better mileage than a similar sized/powered Ranger, Triton, etc.

Yes Derek, I've been very pleased with the motor. The SHO motors love to have the piss, run out of them, just like the 2 strokes and that is something my brain had to get used to because it doesn't seem right.

I totally agree with beetlespin on boat setup, being very important. Total weight and balance (weight distribution) makes a very big difference in performance and handling.

Here's the biggie: When you fish out of a 4 stroke boat, you realize why there's a big push to do away with 2 strokes. You can smell the 2 strokes for 5 minutes, on a windy day, after they go by. I can almost tell you what type of motor you're running by the smell. Optimax is by far the cleanest smelling motor but still has a slight burnt oil smell. When you fish out of a Mercury EFI or Yamaha OX66 motor, you get used to the smell and don't realized, how strong it is. Remember, 2 strokes have some powerful enemies but I'm not one of them. I still love the sound of 250XB or one of the lil' screamers on a Bullet slapping the hell out of the lake as it flies by.

I need to talk to Kite or Coleman, I think they are both running SHO's on Bullets, It just seems like a heavy motor on a light boat, they both seem happy with them and I bet they will flat out haul some water.
