gene0122, Sardis Lake and Grenada Lake in Mississippi, Crappie " Nicest Ones I Have Ever Caught", 11

Mississippi holds four of the top crappie lakes in all of North America.
Sardis, Enid, Arkabutla, and Grenada Lakes.
These four lakes are supposed to be the ones if your looking to reel in a trophy sized crappie.
I figured it was time about time for me to make that journey to Mississippi and see for myself.
Out of these four lakes I managed to fish my first two choices. Sardis Lake and Grenada Lake.
These lakes have a limit of twenty fish per person and a size limit of twelve inches long.
Sounds tough but I had my mind set on achieving this goal.
On Saturday it was Sardis Lake. It has currently been drawn down to its winter pool where fifteen to twenty feet was the average depth in the lower areas of the lake.
At days end we had our forty fish limit of white crappie that were over twelve inches long. The average size fish of the day ran in the thirteen inch range but come much bigger. I caught my largest white crappie to date measuring in at sixteen and three quarter inches. Many fish were thrown back that didn’t meet the twelve and a half inch size boat rule. Mississippi charges one hundred seventy five dollars for every short fish you are caught with. We were taking no chances here.
When night fell it was off further south to Grenada Lake which happens to be Mississippi’s largest lake. Caught a few Z’s at a local motel then got up early to start on the fish. Right off I noticed that Grenada Lake was not a busy as Sardis Lake was yesterday. It appears the lakes closer to Memphis tend to get hit with more pressure. This lake was just as I have heard about. Not as many numbers but the fish tend to run a bit larger. We caught several fourteen inch plus fish with one measuring in at fifteen and a half inches. Called it quits on Grenada at half a day to get an early start back to Tennessee. We still finished the day with twenty quality white crappie to bring home.
I have never been so satisfied or caught so many quality fish as I did on this trip to Mississippi.
Now the question is when do I get to go back?

Thanks for sharing. Great info.

How were you fishing... casting, tightlining, minnows, jigs... and did you have any guidance on locations to fish, or were you strictly winging it? If so, what kind of bank or structure did you key on?

Those are some fish there! Way to go guys. Let us know the jigs/minnows/setup you were throwing. We have some ongoing discussions and debates about techniques to catch em.

RE: gene0122, Sardis Lake and Grenada Lake in Mississippi, Crappie " Nicest Ones I Have Ever Caught"

Ok guys…. A few more details….
I did a little bit of research before making my dream trip to Mississippi.
One thing to keep in mind is that these lakes are not like the ones in East Tennessee and one must adjust accordingly to these differences.
The lakes there are dark, shallow and void of structure compared to the ones we have around here.
Dock shooting and fishing lay downs like we are accustom to are nonexistent on these fertile waters. Hands down, the most popular crappie technique in Mississippi is the art of spider rigging in open water.
Sardis has a five pole limit where as Grenada has a limit of three.
BnM poles forteen to sixteen feet in length are common with the popular crappie gnat tipped with minnows. Crappie gnats in Mississippi appear to be the Bobby Garlands of Tennessee. Let’s not forget the I-Pilots. These things have really taken off out that way.
I opted to go with a guide who had all of the equipment and knowledge on fishing these distant lakes as compared to winging it.
In my opinion, Sardis Lake was my favorite lake out of the two given the extra distance and restrictions. If anyone is interested in fishing Sardis I had a really great guide that I highly recommend. His name is Carl Painter (901-734-7536) from up in Hernando.
His vessel is more than adequate in size. He is an extremely knowledgeable fisherman who knows what he is doing. He will take care of you and definitely put you on the fish. Just an all around great guy!
If your interested in Grenada Lake Jim can give hook you up with the info for Vic Finley. He is another good recommendation for that lake.

Gene
