Good deer!

As many deer as there are now they need to allow baiting.IMO. Same way with dove baiting. You can plant a field of whatever, plow it up, and then hunt it all you want. But throw a lil cracked corn on the ground and you're in big trouble.

I hunt in skin ga and baiting is legal..... however I have yet to see a dang deer in front of my feeder in he day time. That's even on 3000 acres wit 5 people hunting it. With that being said I do however have corn thrown throughout the soy bean fields just to keep them in there after we harvest and turn. And see more than enuf deer to feed the county. But baiting helps the hunters to be more selective on the game being taken and definatly helps you to pattern faster than the old ways of hunting.... about like when u find a dock that has a feeder on it.... kinda makes it a little bit easier lol

I get a lot more mature buck pics over plain ole trophy rocks, than i do over corn piles. I do put corn in front of cams when i first put them out, but thats it.

Are you no longer doing food plots? Since when did you stop planting food plots Churly? emoScratch Jmax

Oh, I still plant as much as I can and we are building new plots every year. Wheat, oats, austrian winter peas, brassicas, and I experiment with cool weather legumes from time to time. That combined with low hunter pressure keeps deer on our property.

I know a redneck that hunts over bait religiously and he has never killed a big buck that I know of. He hunts in areas as good as or even better than most. Plus deer usually walk past corn once the acorns start falling.

Those that dont believe that corn spreads diseases please google "aflotoxin". But if you have to bait to harvest deer and its allowed where you hunt; I say bait away!

Personally, id rather outsmart a big buck, than bait em in.

OH! I did not understand. Sorry about that one there Churly. So to clarify my thinking you are saying you would rather outsmart a big buck with a food plot then bait. emoBang I understand now. Nevermind....... emoPoke Jmax

Well baiting is illeagal in TN, so I dont do it. I feel like the plots help the heard health. There is a big difference in planting foods and pouring corn on the ground.

Redneck in general, I see no real difference in the two. You plant a man made field of food and hunt over it or you put out some feeders or throw out some food and hunt over it. The only real difference I see is the TN Game and Fish makes money off of one and nothing off the other. Both are put there by man, both are not natural and both are designed to bring deer in and keep them in the area. ;) redmax

emoLaugh Glad to meet you too Redbob. emoLaugh

Now you guys know I love Churly so don't take my ribbing on him as a slam to his hunting. emoBigsmile We have hunted together on his property and he has a very nice place. emoThumbsup We just apparently do not see eye to eye on this subject. I got both at my camp in Arkansas that I own and will keep doing the same. I just think it is stupid to fine and ticket the guy out there without the means, money or land that just wants to throw out some corn or set up a feeder to try and improve his chance of getting a deer to put some meat in his freezer. I have hunted deer since 1974 and seen/did both. emoGeezer Jmax

There is a lot of literature out there about the negative affects of baiting deer. Corn is to the deer like ice cream is to kids. They love it and come back to it but it gives no real nutrition. Corn is mainly carbohydrates. Deer need a balanced diet of protiens and fiber to reach maximum health. I am no biologist, but I try real hard to plant stuff that will help with fawn recruitment and of course, big racks. All of our food plots have stands on them but all of the big bucks we have killed off of my place have come from the woods except one. And yes Jim, I believe there is huge difference in planting food crops and dumping a bag of corn on the ground.

I do understand that baiting is about the only way to get deer to come out of some of those south texas sanderos, and Florida palmettos. Ive killed over 80 deer in TN and I have never had to use corn do put a tag on one...Until its leagal in TN, I wont do it, and would advise against it. JMax dont like hunting my place because we dont allow people to shoot anything small, but he is welcome to come up to the mountain any time.

This will be my first year deer hunting and I'm very excited. This thread has been helpful too. I personally compare Food Plots/Baiting to Releasing Structure/Chumming. One is a semi-permanent benefit to the population and the other is a temporary lure. I just wish it was less expensive for my Tennessee out of state license!

You guys need to do it the easy way,,, Do as I do... Dump the High-vis orange, Wear Brown clothes and wave a white Handkerchief as you run through head high clear cuts... The Bucks will hear you running and see glimpses of the colors that look like another deer and they will run right at you. Carry a large Caliber hand gun so you can blast them just before they run over you. You will be able to know when the Bucks are closing in on you by the amount of gunshots you hear from the other hunters trying to hit the deer chasing after you.

My Ex-Wife taught me that trick...

I have a Gamewarden Buddy who told me that the Nashville pressure is trying to pass the laws or remove the restrictions to allow for hunting over Bait for certain Species ... Including Deer.

Piling corn up is a good way to spread disease. I'm going to have to disagree with the comparison of oak trees and corn fields to corn piles. Take a corn field after it's been cut, first of all, it's open and with today's combines they don't leave much on the ground. There are thosands of oaks but you still have to find the ones their feeding under. Personally, I don't care what someone does but piling corn up is just a wee short of bushwacking and there's not much hunting envolved.
