Man, what a way to start the New Year! emoParty We kicked some brown fish butt today. Went out with my good friend Ed McCoy (even if he is a War Eagle emoBigsmile ). Ed has caught a smallmouth or two by accident. This was his first time ever trying to catch one "on purpose." He done good! emoThumbsup Loaded up on Jack's shiners and hit the river before sunrise. His first fish was a spot, just to break the ice. His second fish was a decent brown fish... his third fish was a BIG brown fish. We were fishing crappie rods with 4 lb. test line and it was a battle royale just as the sun broke the horizon. When the battle was done, Ed put 22 inches of smallmouth in the boat. All I had was my spring-loaded 50 lb. catfish scales which showed him over 5#. The fish calculator (22 length - 14.25 girth) puts him at 5 lb.s 8 oz. Not bad for your first time to ever try to catch a smallmouth on purpose. We bass fished about four hours. Ed did let me catch a few, included a couple in the 3 lb. class. We ended with 7 smallmouth and 6 spots. Then Ed left to go watch Auburn win. I kept drowning shiners but bass would not nothing after water shut off at Noon. But hit one of my catfish holes up toward the Dam and used up the remainder on multiple blues, 5 - 10 lbs... and lost three big cats on the light tackle. An absolute great day on the water. I think 2007 is going to be a very good year! emoBigsmile

Congrats Richard. Very nice smallmouth. Too bad you did not wear a red Georgia shirt. If you did you could have caught more fish. You might want to convert over after the game today.emoPoke emoPoke . Are you sure that was your first time trying to catch smallmouth?

I want to thank Richard for one of the best days on the lake I can remember. I wasn't sure my crappie equipment was gonna hold up, but as it turned out (with a little timely back reeling) the 4 pound test and the nine foot rod did fine. I may be addicted. Those smallies sure do fight and they sure are pretty.

Way to go, Richard! Catching big fish on light line sure is fun. Having a 9' rod helps too, I'll bet. Good way to start off the new year. Congratulations.emoGeezer

Very nice! emoThumbsup

I've never fished for bass with live bait. Where do you get "Jack's shiners"? and...What sort of rig are you using? split shot?

I'll try to answer all questions at once...

How deep?

Deep enough emoBigsmile .... just kidding. As I learned on CFF, 12 - 20 feet.

Ed's first time, not mine.... but he taught me a thing or two today.

Shiners from "Jack's Bait & Tackle, ergo "Jack's shiners." emoDoh Plain old wire Aberdeen hook with a 1/8th oz. split shot... fished slooooow. Obviously there's no hooking-setting power with crappie rods and 4 lb. test but there's no need. The wire Aberdeen's are sharp as tacks and penetrate easily. It's the same principal as float & fly fishing, just different terminal tackle. But I want to try some float & fly..
