I just wonder how many fish over 6 or 7 pds. just ignore a shiner because they've seen so many. I've really caught some huge brown fish on other baits. Fish aren't all that smart , they just get accustomed to the same bait over time , despite their insatiatable appetite. The new world record Micropterus sp. is in our river system. It just takes some doing to get the big girl to hit. Something different, is the key.

I will say that it does not hurt to "go large" with your lures. I catch LARGE smallies here on the Mississippi river in current on Husky Jerks (HJ-14) which is huge, as well as the large X-Raps and ShadRaps (SR07 & SR08).

See this smallie my partner caught before the holidays on the 'sippi. He got to cast to our hotspot before I did. :)

I know .. I lived on the Mississippi. In Dubuque, Iowa. Born and raised .. just didn't stay. Left when I was 18. Started fishing up there with my dad as a tadpole! :)

After I got old enough where I could swim and stay out of trouble, my dad used to drop me off to fish when he went to work. Me and my sibs fished ALL day long. Cleaned fish in a local company's water fountain and had sunburns to beat the band. But I'd do it all over again given the chance.

It was a blast. But you didn't catch many of THOSE caliber of fish.
