I am up to 195 and have decided to do something about it. I was hoping yall might have some suggestions for diet. I am going to start doing p90x 3 or 4 days a week... but I figure its going to take eating better to get down to 175 or 180 pretty quickly.
 
Cut out soda and sweet tea. That alone will drop some lbs. Don't eat after 7pm. Eat at least 4-5 small meals a day, instead of 2 or 3 big meals.

Those tips will get you losing weight before you even know it, without having to truly "diet"
 
Start couting carbs. Over the summer i losted 50 pound by walkin and stayin under 100 carbs a day. I walked about 5 miles a day and stayed about 50-80 carbs. Good luck!
 
Craig, just follow the meal plan that comes with P90x and you'll see the weight drop off. I didn't follow it very well at all, so I only lost 10lbs overall. I would put it closer to about 20lbs of fat lost and 10lbs of muscle gained though. I'm gonna try to really stick to the meal plan hard this next round.
 
Www.absdiet.com or the p90x diet. I disagree with not eating after 7 though. A protein filled snack before bed premotes a metabolism spike while you sleep, which in turn burns more cals. It's a cornerstone of abs, zone and p90x
 
I am doing now and have done before The South Beach Diet. It works for me and once you get past the first couple of weeks the craving for bad carbs and sugars subsides. It's really just eating good wholesome meals. Lean meats, veggies, and whole grains. Last time I just dieted to lose the weight. This time I am dieting and changing my whole lifestyle. Started running and really enjoy it. I thought with running your body would need tons of carbs but it just isn't so. I eat carbs but only good whole grains and some fruits. I'm very goal driven and will complete my first full marathon this year. I have been training fairly strict since the first week of November. When I started I was at an all time high of 244lbs. Today I'm 206. My blood pressure had gotten into the hypertensive range and is now below normal. Resting heart rate as I type is 56. I'm also have a rather large wager on the line which helps emoCool Part of the wager was before and after pictures which maybe I'll post at the conclusion of our bet March 7th.
 
+1 for Abs and South Beach diet. I'm following "The Metabolism Miracle" which is similar to South Beach and I have lost 18 lbs in the first month. Refined carbs are your enemy!
 
I will check out the absdiet.com. Somebody burned me the P90x dvd's so I don't have the diet that goes with it.
 
Save your money on the "fad" diets and work-out plans. The key to wieght loss lay in three components; diet, exercise, & desire (will-power). Watch your carbs closely, which means stay away from starchy vegatables( corn, white potatoes, rice, etc.) and sugary snacks. Water to drink (get used to it), green vegatables, lean meats, and no biscuts! Exercise can be yard work, walking, etc., doesnt have to be high impact aroebics. If you decide to try weight-lifting, do light weight/ high repetitions.
 
Good carbs - yes; bad carbs - no! It's that simple. Google Glycemic Index to identify good carbs and bad carbs. You will see that wheat, corn, rice, potatoes and sugar is what makes you gain or maintain weight.
 
Ditto what flpper said. I've been writing health and fitness articles since 2002, interviewed hundreds of doctors, nurses, dietitians, etc., and it comes down to the same thing over and over: burn more calories than you take in. This may mean all you have to do is start exercising. Or exercising more. Or you may need to watch what you eat. Actually, if you start exercising, you may start eating more. This is good. If you don't eat when hungry, your body will stop losing weight pretty fast. And drink plenty of water.

That is the number of calories per day you need to maintain your current weight (if there is no change in your physical activity level, that is). For instance, if you weigh 200 pounds, you can consume 2,000 calories per day, at the same physical activity level. At 180 pounds, you can consume 1,800 calories and so forth. It's easy to calculate and keep up with and avoids keeping a log, records, etc.

Nice short-cut, but be careful. You still have to watch what you eat and drink; you don't want calories from the wrong foods. Have been an athlete in my younger years and always found that diet and exercise are the main components in the struggle. Again, stay away from starchy foods, sugary food and drink, and exercise. The more you exercise and watch these foods, the more weight loss you'll experience. And use common sense. An occasional baked potato won't hurt much, but eat it with a lean cut of steak, maybe once every two weeks. A lean piece of meat, or grilled chicken or grilled fish with salad and green veggies the rest of the time. Start slow with exercise; maybe walk a slow mile a day on flat ground (HS track, mall corridor), then after a few weeks step it up a little. You didn't get overweight overnight, you ain't gonna get trim overnight either.

Portion control!!!! I bought an old house that was built in 1965, when my wife put our plates in the cabinet the door would not shut. Everything is bigger today than it used to be including us.
 
Unless you are willing to make a lifestyle change in your eating habits, no diet plan will work long term. Any diet plan that doesn't reset your metabolic rate will not work and is not safe. Best advice is: if it tastes good, spit it out. emoBigsmile

I continually battle with sugar addiction. Cookies are my enemy. Refined anything isn't good. If man has messed with it, don't eat it. I have found that it takes about 1 week or so to get all the sugar cravings out of my system. Good luck in whatever you do and stick to whatever plan that you choose to follow. emoBigsmile emoGeezer
