Hey, everyone. I'm wanting to get in to turkey hunting next season and am looking for a "very affordable" entry level gun. By "affordable", I mean under $250. With that criteria, any suggestions? What should I be looking for in barrel length, chamber size, etc?

Thanks for the help.

You cant go wrong with a remington 870 exspress, it shoots 3inch federal shells real good, i hunted with one for about twenty years and it will still killem, i got a .665 choke in it, they are a real good gun to start out with, and its within that price range, get a gun sock or camo tape and your ready, just keep ur shots inside 45yds, goodluck.

Mossberg 835 with 28'' barrel you can get one with a blued barrel and walnut stock and camo it out with cloth tape.
I have one like that and love it, you should be able to find one close to that amount,i would check at wal-mart that's where i got mine.

I use a 870 Remington with a 671 True glow tube. I would look for a gun that fit my price range and get severial different chock tubes and shoot as many different load as i can afford through it in 4, 5, and # 6 shot size. Find the best tube and shot mix you can for your gun. No two guns shoot the same with the same chock and shot. As for barrel length it is up to you what you want. Short barrels have advantages as do longer barrels. I have shot the extremly short 21" to 30" but have settled for the mid ground with a 26". As for the manufactures of guns look at Mossburg, Remington, Stoger, New england Arms, Winchester and Bennell, they all are good guns. Check around at different pawn shop and gun shows you can pick one up for what you are wanting to spend. Also watch the sales papers there will be sales on these at different times. Just remember to listen to the birds they will tell you if you are doing the right things. Sit still and stay put for a hour after you think you need to move that Gobbler maybe just out of site over the ridge. Good luck and good hunting dont give up if you dont kill a bird right away enjoy your time in the woods the birds will come.

Thanks for the help! The last shotgun I've shot was the Mossberg 590, which was great at taking down bad guys, but I'm not so sure about turkey. I'll keep an eye out for those that you've mentioned. Something's got to turn up.

What do y'all know about the Maverick 88 by Mossberg? It looks pretty similar to the 590 that I'm used to shooting and is definitely in my price range.

My neighbor has a brand new camo...Maverick for sale. He was going Turkey hunting with his son-in-law. That son-in-law is history. I can give you his number if you would like. Shoot me a pm...if interested.

to me the best gun is one that has a longer barrel that the entire barrel is full choked. Don't get me wrong chokes work great but a gun that a modified cylinder the entire length of the barrel holds a tighter pattern further out than a choke in the end of the barrel. of course for that type of gun you will looking to spend in the 600.00 - 1000.00 dollar range. I also love the mossberg 835 and I have one that I love and it shoots 2 3/4, 3 and 3 1/2" shells. My first turkey gun was a Mossberg 500 in full camo for around 200.00 brand new at Walmart. Hope this helps, also get a 3D doghouse style blind.

Got an old Cherokee 12 ga will sell for about what u wanna spend, will include box of your specified shells............ emoGeezer emoUSA

I have a Remington 870 super express mag 3 or 3 1/2 30 " that i found in a pawn shop for 200,one of the best gun i have ever had. put a xx full ck in and it will take the head off of one at 50 to 55 yrd......Great gun, under 200 and you cant go wrong if you want a good turkey gun. Try to find one of these,i think you will be happy for the price.

Also found a Stoeger P-350 for $279 at Academy. A little over the limit I set, but close enough to consider for a new gun.
