Had Tom gobble 25 times yesterday morn, everything I did he responded, but would not come in. I tried walkin away and calling then snuck back to him and didn't call. Tried just light purrs and it drove him crazy. It wasn't the best place to try to stalk him ( he was up higher than me and was thick) was he just a smart old bird or should I have tried something different. Seems like as fired up as he was I should have been able to work him. He even walked parralel to the road I was on for over 150 yards. Any suggestions for next time.

Sounds like you were trying to call a turkey down a hill. From my personal exsperience you would have had a better chance getting hit by lightning on a blue bird day. Next time get as high as you can then get him fired up, and he may run through the blind on ya'

I try to get inside 100 yards before I ever sit down. It helps eliminate lots of variables that can go wrong in the distance between you and the bird. It is also much more natural. Dont forget in a normal scenario the hens usually go to the gobbler and you are trying to convince him to do somehing completely against the norm. Once you get em that close I don't yelp much, it just isn't as natural. Don't be afraid to crawl in those last few yards.

Main thing is don't ever be content with where you are sitting. If bird is more than 100 yards and not right out in the open, move up!

ive called em down hill before but not much like they said if your below him and he is walking back and forth when he goes away from you try your best to at least get even with him then call to him but not much if you yelp at him and he answers you give it 10 or so min before you call again scratching the ground is one of the most deadliest calls u can have cause turkeys are always feeding i was in the same scenerio u were in last year and he was strutting back and forth on this saddle and when he went away i ran to the top of the hill and he was gobbling at me walking ...sat down yelped really soft and bam gobble .......i never called again just scratched the ground and 5 min he was on my shoulder being carried to the truck....good luck
