Just curious...how many of you use rattles on your jigs? Or don't? And why? I've always added rattles to my jigs, whether for flipping or casting. However, I flipped a small jig this weekend without rattles and I feel that it led to more bites. Is it possible that the heavily pressured bass on the Chick respond better to a smaller and quieter presentation? Or was it just a good day for flipping and the bass would have bit anything?

If sales are an indicator Jason, the vast majority of my jig sales (90+%?) are sold WITHOUT rattles. I offer them as an additional piece that can be added or subtracted to the jigs as desired, and few ever buy them. Like Pointer, I just use them at night or in real dirty water.

I wish they made a middle ground rattle. Maybe one pellet in a rubber container that would make a sutle thud. I just dont thing that high pitched baby rattle sound is convincing to much under the water.

I always use rattles. You wont make me believe that a rattle spooks fish. I think it may attract a few more fish than not having one.

make your own .. plastic pen thin walls, put in one or a bunch, seal the ends with a lighter, Ive also used glass Christmas tree lights just cut off one end add rattles and melt the glass closed, have also used thin brass tube, pinch ends shut after added bb's or buck shot and solder ends .. experiment with one or all.

You can use a plastic drink straw also and seal the ends.

I also use rattles in heavily stained water and dark conditions. I'm not sure it matters because I seem to catch as many without it. However, shad don't rattle....crawfish don't rattle....etc.emoBigsmile

I don't think I have a jig that doesn't have them.... even my swimming jigs. But after this post I may try it out. But I'd have to start catching them on a jig again to really know. Don't throw it as much as I used to. I use it more in summer and fall as I have grown older. But I truly believe it's a year round bait. With rattles.

both work, but like they said use them when the water is dirty ect... and at night rattles help. i use them 90% of the time because on most of our lakes the water is more stained than you realize. also, crawfish and shad DO make noises when they are moving and it is a clicking sound to us humans. I have heard recordings of them but iI can't remember where to go listen to them or I would post a link. If the clicking was not a natural sound I don't think we could get a fish to even try and eat any lure.
