Which one does all the work when building the nest for spawning, the buck bass or the female bass?

Just for future reference it is not a "Nest", it is a "spawning bed". emoPoke Jmax

The male does most of the work. Then he goes out and herds the female towards the area and then she does her thing.... She fans it like she wants it. Typical female...LOL no offense girls.. FA

I've heard them called "nests" and spawning beds. I normally call them beds, but I occasionally refer to them as nests. Either way, they are egg-layin bass just waitin' to get a good ol' jaw jerkin'. emoLaugh emoLaugh

Jmax, you might want to read those articles Rsimms posted in his reply to my question before you say its not a nest. emoLaugh emoLaugh emoDance

Maybe that is a term that is more recently being used. I read the articles and I see what you are saying, that has not been used around me growing up bass fishing. Until now I have never heard anyone call them a nest. You build a nest, you make a bed. I have never seen a bass gather stuff and lay it around their bed to build a nest.emoScratch Whatever butters your bread there fischnrod. If you want to call it a nest that is fine by me.emoCool Jmax

Wow. I never knew they were refered to as "nests" until I came across this thread. I've always refered to them as "beds". As a matter of fact, I've always said "bedding bass" or "bedding Bream". So does this now mean that bird's nests are now bird beds?......emoScratch emoScratch emoSmile emoSmile emoSmile

emoLaugh emoLaugh emoUpsmile Good point, I got a couple bird beds in my yard right now.emoBigsmile Jmax

TexasBassFishing article - "Preparing the nest, the male largemouth shakes its head and tail to sweep away bottom debris. The typical nest is a saucer-shaped depression about 2 to 3 feet in diameter, or twice the length of the male."
That sounds like building a nest to me. They may not be using appendages and such to gather stuff, but either way, they are building a nest. Again, I normally say "bedding bass" as well, but I have heard many people say nest and many say bed.

According to wikipedia:

A nest is place of refuge built to hold an animal's eggs and/or provide a place to raise their offspring. They are usually made of some organic material such as twigs, grass, and leaves; or may simply be a depression in the ground, or a hole in a tree, rock or building. Sometimes available human made materials such as string, plastic, cloth, hair, paper, etc. may be used as well.

Generally each species has a distinctive style of nest. Nests can be found in many different habitats.

Nests are built primarily by birds, but also by mammals, fish, insects and reptiles.

They may have some or all of the following zones: attachment; outer decorative layer; structural layer; lining.

Some birds will build nests in trees, some (such as vultures, eagles, and many seabirds like Kittiwakes) will build them on rocky ledges, and others nest on the ground or in burrows.

If you look up Beds, it says to see also nests...

so What I'm saying is EVERYONE is right. Now... let's just find the things and we'll call 'em whatever feels comfortable. :)

I surrender to DoubleB, he has got us there.emoParty I love this site with so much drama.emoLaugh People are being killed in wars and we are worried about calling a place where a bass lays it's eggs a bed or nest. I think DoubleB won the debate(If you could call it that) with his definition answer. Your the man there DB!emoThumbsup Jmax

I think I will be looking for some "nesting" bass this weekend.emoBigsmile
