Line on the g

Braid will break if you make a kink in it with a backlash. I broke braid yesterday on 5/8oz. bait!? last year, I started using Gamma 8lb. for deep cranking, I used 12lb. for my trap fishing this weekend and I love the stuff, just use a medium rod and set the drag accordingly. That stuff has a really small diameter and gives baits a great action. I landed a 5lber Saturday on the stuff in shallow nasty water along with a few other fish and I used it yesterday with out a hitch. i kept feeling the line for kinks and roughness and i never got any rough spots so i feel it has a good abrasion resistance. Jacks has plenty. Second choice would be excel, you cant beat that stuff for the price and its very strong. Wait, I did break off on the Gamma yesterday but that was when I hooked a blue heron who flew into my line, it was hillarious! The line must have been wrapped around his feet as he flew off the bait shot towards the bird and the line tightened when the bait got to the bird the he hit the water then the line broke. But in defense of the line I can say that I brought a 25lb blue heron down in 50mph winds before breaking! Strong stuff! emoSorry bird!

This is the 1st year I've not thrown the trap on braid. I'm throwing it on 20lb. vicious flouro. Still throwing the cb on braid though. I've had braid break more times that I can count while casting, the only only draw back from braid is I can't clear the grass off it by jerking the rod like I can with braid.

Another vote for 15# Big Game. I have used braid in the past and didn't have a problem with it except that without the stretch of mono, I have pulled hooks out of the fishes mouth.

The only difference that I can find between the Excell and Stren is the price.Used to order the Excell in bulk 2500 yds spools but seemed to weaken with time. Keeping out of the light and in the fridge seemed to help

15lb Invisx for the traps...fluorocarbon has been nothing but goooood to me.

As for the braid issue, I'll definitely side with RR on the PowerPro. I've never had it break and I've yanked my fair share of hawgs out of salad and laydowns with it. However, I've never used it to sling traps.

Jason, I didn't know you threw your traps on flouro? I like the stretch the mono has to help with not so well hooked fish. Does it help with feel? I usualy don't have to feel the fish to hook them. Am I missing the boat here or somthing

2jigs, I throw everything with fluoro, with the exception of mono for topwater and braid for flippin'. Contrary to popular belief, fluoro does stretch. When matched with the right tip action, its benefits (ie. sensitivity, limited visibility, abrasion resistance) far outweigh those of conventional mono.
