i catfish alot and mainly use chicken liver or live shad. so my question when i was in sportsman i saw rooster and turkey livers with one is the best or whats the diference the three? i'm just curious

a. chicken
b.turkey
c. rooster

All of the above is fine for catching the small eaters or small cats, especially the chicken livers since they are so easy to find. Catch some skipjacks below the dams around here and cut them up in big chunks for the larger cats. Keep your xtra skipjacks in the freezer. Frozen skipjack seems to be better than fresh.

PS..I almost forgot to tell you about using chicken breast and thighs for the cats. Mr. Simms can tell you all about these.

I have always had better luck with chicken livers. I have tried others, but they seem to work best. I also had a guy call my radio show this week and he used trot line alot. He said they used ivory soap and frozen shrimp. He said they would get as many hits on the soap as the shrimp.

I have to try it. I will let you know.

I do not recall ever catching a bigger catfish on chicken livers. I have caught many catfish on chicken livers but none over Twelve pounds. The bigger fish will hit baitfish, cut baitfish and other meats much better than livers.

That is not a scientific fact.

I have some stinky whole Squid from saltwater fishing, I wonder how that would work. You could even stuff the body with livers.... I think I will give it a try.

The difference between chicken and rooster liver is that the rooster livers are tougher, that is, they will last longer when hit by catfish and bluegills. Also, you won't throw a rooster liver off the hook like you will a chicken liver. As for the turkey, I have no idea.

Ditto on the livers. Never got a fish over 8lbs on livers. Alvin brought some squid home from Panama City and the cats ate it. He did not have much but he did stick a pretty good fish on them that pulled off. That was a couple of years ago.

I agree with the live bait. We will cut up some fresh caught bait fish and the bigger fish will go after them better.

I bet the squid will work great! Stuffing it with livers works too I bet!

As for livers, only if you like smaller fish. If you want the bigger ones, definatly go with cut bait like posted already. I have been using cut bait and chicken most days just to give more variety, and I can say they will hit it 50/50 except the bigger fish most always like those stankin skipjacks.

I'll bet you a $100 if give you a hand full of livers from a chicken you can't tell me whether they came from a rooster or a hen.......emoBigsmile

Actually, yea, I could. Rooster livers are a darker shade of pink than chicken livers. :) Been there and done that.

LOL I don't want his money. However, it's true. Rooster livers are darker in color than hen livers. My father and I thought the same until we bought a carton of each. The rooster livers next to the hen livers are easily discernable.

I suppose that it's from the difference in the hormones from the rooster compared to the hen.

They will bite on spam. Sometimes I have caught them on spam when nothing else would work. I am actually going to try "treet" which is just like spam but about half the price. If It works I'll sure post it. Hot dogs soaked in cherry jello work also. They stay on the hook well

Spur, you don't know what you have missed. Put fried or nuked spam on light bread smothered in mustard, mighty fine eatin, I like the smoked best of all. And it don't taste like chicken or rooster.

I am proud to say I have NEVER bought a can of spam.

Tell me it ain't so Spur! Spam is the most versatile stuff we've got. Good with eggs and bisquits on a cold morning fried up. Or fry it up with a big ripe 'mator on sandwhich! Heck even the kitty cats with fins love it!
