Chicken livers come from the young 8 to 12 week old fryer chickens thus the softer texture and lighter color. Rooster livers come from the older adult breeding stock thus the darker color and tough texture. I have used both in the past but have never caught a cat over ten pounds on them. I would take the livers, cut them into fishing size chunks, lay them out on a flat cookie sheet, cover them in garlic salt and leave them in the sun all day. Then I put them in a plastic bag and either used them right away or froze them for future use. By doing this the livers stayed on the hook better and they got more bites than the fresh livers right out of the box.
Several years ago we were jug fishing using three different baits.....cut shad, garlic cured livers and fresh livers. We wrote on each jug the type bait that was used with it. The garlic livers out fished the other baits 3 to 1.

LOL I don't want his money. However, it's true. Rooster livers are darker in color than hen livers. My father and I thought the same until we bought a carton of each. The rooster livers next to the hen livers are easily discernable.

I suppose that it's from the difference in the hormones from the rooster compared to the hen.
Maybe it's because the chicken drank too much;)

So according to Cathooker, its an older chicken, not neccessarily a Hen or Rooster. (as I thought).

Slightly off topic but most people that won't eat spam most likely had a dad in WW II. GIs got spam for all three meals (if lucky) and passed their prejudice on to their offspring. My dad had a heart condition and they wouldn't take him and spam is always in my cupboard.
Nowhere is is this prejudice more noticeable than in the boy scouts in the late 50 and 60s.

SpurHunter - 10/29/2007 10:59 PM I am proud to say I have NEVER bought a can of spam.

Where are you from??? You sure ain't American.  Have you ever nuked a "MoonPie" and put a big scoop of `Neller icecream on it? (J/K)</p>

On TV I saw a show where Spam dishes were top knotch in some exclusive resturants.  Hold on a minute....I think they were French eateries.  Spur...Are you from France?

Have you tried the hickory smoked spam? It is deeeelicious. Nuke some and spread the mustard on light bread, put the spam, two big slices,  a big slice of onion and a home grown tomato if you have it. another way is to add bbq sauce to the cooked spam on a sandwich. ( my daddy was in the korean war and he liked it)

I have seen my kids eat sardines from a can, but neither one of them will touch spam to bait the hook...especially after I told them what anatomic animal parts it was probably made from emoBigsmile...like me, they now have spam to thank for their personal best catfish.

Last week at Lake Martin we tried Armour Treet at sunset on the dock.
Three 2 to 4 lb channel cats were caught in about half an hour.It works but you have to be gentle casting it.Maybe Spam is a little tougher, but the local "convenience" store wanted about $3.50 for a can of Spam and 2 bucks for the treet.I suspect it was well aged too.

I love Spam.......I can tell ya all this: If you have been in some of situations I have been in and have been as hungry as I have been, then you will think Spam is GOOOODDDD. You won't care what kind of animal parts is in it.

I love vienie sausages and potted meat, I know they are made from scraps. Smoked oysters are good too.

Its spiced ham in a can, right? I would have never eat that stuff if I knew it was made from slaughter scraps! emoTongue

They will bite on spam. Sometimes I have caught them on spam when nothing else would work. I am actually going to try "treet" which is just like spam but about half the price. If It works I'll sure post it. Hot dogs soaked in cherry jello work also. They stay on the hook well

Terry, I have tried Treet and couldn't get a bite on it. Haven't tried spam yet. I have too good luck on bluegill parts and skipjack chunks. Shrimp used to be my favorite and my biggest cat came on shrimp. Not big compared with some of the hogs that you guys catch, but 39 pounds is pretty good for me. I target smaller cats anyway. emoGeezer

Cut that SPAM up about 2"x2" and 1/2" thick on a size 6-8o circle hook and 2 oz egg sinker carolina rigged. Its best used for vertical fishing since it cannot be cast far but it works for me...only when I drop it near big catfish! emoBigsmile

Good Luck!
