Had my first "Blind Date" with a fellow CFF member this morning. Several days ago, WS6Clint PM'ed me and invited me to chase some smallies with him. So, we met up at the Riverpark this morning at 6AM. I can only guess that after reading so many posts from me about fishing the river, That I should know alot about. Well, I sure showed him!!

First off, let me say that Clint is one of the finest young men I have ever met. All day long it was yes, sir this and no, sir that. He is a well-raised young man. He is also highly skilled with a rod & reel. He can cast long and accurately! Which is a good thing because his skill at boat positioning leaves a bit to be desired. emoLaugh He knows what I mean!

Also, we both were foolish enough to believe the weather forecast for this morning. You know, Sunny with a small chance of afternoon and evening thundershowers. We spent about 30 minutes under C.B. Robinson bridge during a deluge which would have been OK except for about a minute of a 60-80 MPH windburst. We both got drenched!

Finally, to the fishing! We went up to the dam to start. Clint had never been above the RR bridge, so I show him what he needed to look out for in that area. We started out throwing top water in the current. Shad were busting all around us but no luck. I caught the first bass of the day off the wing wall on a tube. The fish itself was nothing special except that it was the first fish on the "Emory River" custom rod by Jon The Fisherman. I love the rod!!!

We celebrated Diversity today. We caught Largemouth, smallmouth, & spotted bass. We caught large long-eared sunfish, small war mouth, and & blue cat of 5-6 pounds. We caught maybe 10 bass total, with Clint getting the largest, about 15". So, not a particularly great day of fishing, but the beginning of a great friendship.

Oh, yeah! Clint likes rip-rap too!

I am glad you like the rod MB and I hope it catches many more in the future. Looks like yall had fun, but I don't see how you guys can take the heat. I walked outside this morning and it was like walking into a dogs mouth.

We had evaporative cooling going on for several hours after the sun came out, but I sure got hot after that!!!

Loved your post.....Clint, I told you his guiding abilities had much to be desired... but I love fishing with him... he spoke very highly of you and since you love riprap he would not say anything bad...LOL
Where is the hat?????emoGeezer

Good Job MB and Clint. I also got hung out in it this morning. Got under a empty boat house and rode it out.

At least you guys caught something.- All I caught for my efforts was about a 5 pound gar.

Oh my goodness! I forgot about the gar. Clint caught about a 3 ft gar on a bandit. luckily, it managed to get off without having to be handled.

Good post MB! Glad you and Clint got to go and it is fun meeting up with people you have never fished with and find out that all in all we share a lot in comman. I know I had never met Pointer 78 till the other day when we fished together and we had a lot of fun. Great post and thanks for sharing!emoThumbsup

MB, I had a BLAST today! Very helpful to a person that is not too familiar with the river. I appreciate your comments as well, like I said earlier, you can thank my father for that.

Now, about my boat handling.....I think I did ok for a 20ft boat in 34k+cfs water with only a 55lb thrust trolleremoPoke emoLaugh

Not only did we diversify in the fish we caught, but what we caught 'em on as well! Several different worms, crankbaits, jigs, spinnerbaits, tubes, I think you could safely say we were junk fishing. If we had caught a drum and a striper we woulda hit a grand slam.

Mad Bomber is as good a person as you could ask for. Let go again sometime, friend!emoToast

Oh yeah,

"It's all about the hookset! Big rod, big reel, big line, big sinker, big hook, big worm. It's all about the hookset!"

I was joshin' you about the boat position! Remember, I wanted to get away from the same old, same old. For me, that means backing away from the bank and fishing out deeper. If I had wanted to do the same old thing, I would have gone out with Fat Albert!!emoLaugh emoGeezer

Largemouth, smallmouth, spotted bass, long-eared sunfish, warmouth, blue cat, and gar.

In Florida they have something called an Inshore Grand Slam and it varies in species based on which area you are fishing. Redfish, Flounder, and Speckled Trout is one for the panhandle, while other areas include cobia, permit, tarpon, grouper and bonefish based on location.

I figure that's definitely enough species to warrant a TN River slam of some kind - Great Report!

Fat Albert, all this just got me to thinking about what the 3 hardest fighting fish might be in the TN River in this area...maybe we can figure out what defines a TN River Slam....I figure Smallmouth has to be one of them.

I nominate LM, SM, spot, and Striper for the TN river Grand Slam. The Striper makes the deal because you have to change tactics or just be flat lucky to get one.

I had a client catch a big gar this morning. Sadly he wanted a picture so it had to "handled." I got the gloves on and went to grab him by the nose (the gar, not the client). Big ole gar flipped hard and bloodied my lip. Those suckers are dangerous... but we got our picture. It was a ROUGH morning catfishing. Slowest I've had all summer. We got one blue... 14 lbs. But at least we weren't skunked.
