I live in N.Ga.
the other night my nabior came by very nervious, thought a M/L was following him [he is not one to get carried awaywith a story]
2 weeks ago a large dog was found ripped up the liver was gone.
I want to set a hunting cam up to try to get a pic should I use bait?and what kind?

Rumor has it that some have been released in the Cherokee Nat'l forest, but supposedly the forest svc won't own up to it due to the fear it could cause. I've been told that two have been spotted around the Ocoee area, including one the lept from a high shoulder and cleaned a dog right out of the bed of a passing truck.

As mentioned, this is all rumor and I'm merely spreading it some more ... like all good rumors ... so don't take it for the gospel truth.

Oh Lordy... don't let me get started in this thread. Call me naive, call me ignorant or call me part of the "cover-up." Nobody is "stocking" mountain lions anywhere East of the Mississippi.... unless it is somebody's "pet" lion that they obtained or imported illegally that either escaped, or was released. Find me a track, find me scat, find me a "kill," or get me that "trail cam photo." Otherwise I will do all I can to quiet this terminal outdoor myth.
As for "bait" for the trail cam photo, real wild mountain lions typically won't "scavenge." They like to kill thier own stuff. The released "pets" probably would scavenge... but I won't believe either exists in these parts until somebody provides me with some of the above evidence. I'm done now. emoBigsmile

Well I have heard a lot about the mountain lions as well. Every place in TN I have lived from Knoxville, Nashville, and now here in Chattanooga. I have always thought of it as a rumor or myth until one day I looked up and low and behold, there was a mountain lion. You never would have thought that one of those cats would let bigfoot walk it around on a leash. I am with Richard on this one, there probably are some here but they are ones that people had as pets and got tired of feending.

There have been Mountain lions all over north GA for years. As far as I know they have always been there and not stocked. I have had two run-ins with BIG cats on Pigion Mtn. And saw another big cat on Lookout Mtn near Head River.
There was a problem of big cats killing calfs, pigs and dogs at the base of the Pigion Mountain in Kensington back in the 80's. It was so bad a reward was being offered by farmers. It was not Wiley Coyote. The kills and the tracks were big cats. There was part of a pig that was hung in a tree and Coyotes don't do that.

I have seen them and I can assure that it is not a Myth. I am not talking about Bobcats. I see them as well. I am talking about cats that leave a 2" wide track.

I saw on another site where their presence was confirmed in the "boothill" of SE Missouri by trail cam photos recently. I would love to know that the cats have reclaimed areas they used to inhabit (Like TN). But, I have spent many hours in the woods and have never seen one. I have seen people bait leopards in Africa using freshly killed game.

Mountain lions and water moccasins have something in common: neither live in the Chattanooga area, but there is always stories about the water skier that fell into the nestemoLaugh !

Be sure of you claims that something does not exist in this area. A few years back it was reported in Flat Rock, AL that a mountain loin was killing a man's goats that lived near the bluff. I was very unsure of this myself, until I was hunting near the property with some snow on the ground and came across the some strange tracks. I took a photo of the track to research it further. The only thing I could find that matches is a mountain lion. Supposedly, some scat was collected from near the goat pen and sent to the state, which confirmed the mountain loin presence, I don't know if this really happened. I feel that there are a few left in this area, but they stay in very rugged terrain and remain very shy.

On the water moccasians being in this area, i can 100% confirm the presence. My father and I was turkey hunting on Little River WMA on Lookout mountain. He nearly step on the snake at a stream crossing, of course we shot the snake. We carried it to the checking station, where a wildlife officer confirmed it was a water moccasian.

On another interesting note, I have notice that the bear population in north georgia has also began to mitgrate west. 2 years ago my mother bought a new house on the bluff in Trenton on Sand Mountain. As always she would dumped the leftover table scraps off of the bluff, until she had an unexpected visitor. A medium size bear paid a visit to her back patio. Also the Alabama wildlife officers has posted picutres of a bear with 3 cubs at the checking station for Little River WMA.

we are talking about the area of north sand mnt. A area known as the big woods
approx 4000 arce gorug area

Last year my neighbors saw a black panther cross their fence line and into the slough that is across the street from me. My neighbors saw the cat on 2 occasions. I thought maybe he had too many "Lites" until I saw the paw print myself and it was massive. It certainly didnt come from a little kitty cat.

Not wanting to make any claims of anything out of the ordinary. BUT>>>> I have tried to find the pics I took a few years ago out in the Cohutta area. I used to live up there and found out that we had a nice big cat that stayed up there. I got pics of it and it was ID'ed as a mountain lion or panther by the Ga DNR. I took the pics with a Kodak 110 and the pics wasn't all that good but identifiable. I have lost them now.

I also had one jump out in the road up on hwy 64 a few years back. One of the log truck drivers from NC was behind me and I was pulling my boat. It was about 4:30 am. We was gabbin on the cb radio and it jumped out in front of me. I almost wrecked cause it jumped up on the guard rail and stood there. He said he saw it too. I would not be a bit afraid to say that they exist around here. But I know its hard to prove without pics.......

I have seen one over above Lake Burton in the war woman management area. It was chasing a deer. It was a nice tawny brown color and had a very long tail..... Too long for a oversized bobcat... Anyway, I believe they are there.

I saw a big cat with a long tail near the town of Viola several years ago while digging Ginseng. I lived in Hillsboro at the time and around those parts its well known that there are a few around. I also saw 2 pretty big Bobcats on the property of the company I work for. The Panther I saw was brown and kinda rough looking, I was on my knees digging when he happened by about 20 yards away, when he saw me he bolted and I left the wood and never did go back to dig again.

We had a lot of rumors about big cats when I lived up toward Birchwood. Most concerning them living on White Oak Mountain. Had a bunch of folks that swore they had seen them.

As far as water moccasins go I've seen more of them than you can imagine. When I was a teen we lived near a pond that mostly covered in lilly pads, and was about 5 to 8 acres. It was INFESTED with moccasins. We came on one that had caught a small bluegill and was trying to swallow it. When we walked up the snake tried to let the fish go but it's fangs and the fish's fins caught and the snake was unable to spit the fish up. I can remember seeing the fangs drip venom as it tried to strike at us. There were lots of moccasins in that pond. Contrary to belief, moccasins do inhabit Tennessee. Ask my brother. When he was 14 he was bit on the hand and taken to Erlanger with a moccasin bite that he got near the bridge at Snow Hill Road. More info on moccasins here from the State:

Interesting that that fella posted a sighting 3 years AFTER he saw it. I have trouble remembering details from yesterday ... I doubt I would be able to recall what I actually saw for a few moments from 3 years ago without having it embellished with my own personality and fantasy. Translated .. more fiction than fact.
