New Deer Rifle :)

Thanks for the reply cheez, I like the .308 also, until the .338 L came along the good 'ol .308 was by most experts the most ballistically perfect projectile and they are still arguing over it. Once you get her broke in good if you are going to use it exclusively for long range shots stay with the heavier projectiles, they are more stable at long flights and the wind has less effect on them and try to pick a longer bullet with a boat tail, the only drawback to the heavier bullet is a few more clicks on the elev. knob. I have been telling people for years that every rifle is different in which ammo it likes, go with what works the best and dont practice with the cheap stuff and then expect the same shot placement, practice with what you are going to hunt with. I really enjoy my civilian version of the g-3 it was designed for a general purpose battle weapon but it is a lot more robust and accurate than most anything off the shelf. Good luck on the break in and PM me if you want to talk guns or let me know how the project is going.

I looked at the .338 Lapua and the .300 Win Mag before I decided on the .308. The deciding factor was that the DPMS would be multi purpose. Good moderate long range gun, good predator or deer gun and a very good defense rifle. Both up close and at LR. I have 20 rounds of power in one magazine plus more mags as backup.

As far as the extra clicks on the scope goes, well that is why I chose the Nghtforce. Nobody makes a better scope for this purpose with the illuminated reticle selection under $2k. I researched long range repeatable scopes for several weeks and the only negative reviews I could find or hear regarding the NF were from folks who never owned one. Best of all the bad boy is made right here in the good old USA.

Awesome weapon. I will be deer hunting with a 30-30 my first year of gun season. But I do want a 308. eventually it truly is a great round. I've been shooting all my life and like the 308 and 270. Well good luck with it and hope you get a monster in December. emoToast

Hope the package works good for you. I am not familar with nightforce will have to research them, If I had the coin to drop on a really good scope it would be a schmidt bender. Keep us posted.

Look in any of the long range/sniper websites. You will find tons of info on the NF scopes. Glas is not quite as good as S & B but the NF will hang with them in every other area. US made and average $1000-$1500 less money. NF is pretty much king of the long range shooting community.

Did you get your scope with drop compensation reticle and if so was it camed for the .308? And I will check out the NF line, Thanks!

Check this out. Scroll down to the NP-R2 reticle. Nightforce as with any high end scope does not offer BDC reticles. Too many variables for the gimmick reticles to actually work as advertised. They do have some reticles they call "velocity reticle" that kind of work as a BDC but the shooter still has to do their homework.

Thanks cheez, thats a nice reticle and very informative, I have been thinking about putting a scope on my hk 300 and I will look into the NF line!

Yeah none of the high end scopes offer bdc reticles. That's why its always good to keep a small pad and pencil on you for long range shooting. You don't really need a dcr if you know what your doing anyways. All you need is some very basic math and to know how to properly use mil dots! :)

That is a pretty cool cheat sheet. Makes your long range shot calculations a little bit easyier. Do you write them down or have them memorized?

I'm good to go on the bullet drop as long as I know the range. My learning curve will be in range estimation without the crutch of a lazer rangefinder.

Which makes my original post have sincere validity. Trust me cheez, I know plenty about long range shooting & the risks involved. I should have asked some questions before I made my original post, 1. Is there an absolute need for that long of a shot? Big field or something like that where you may possibly have that long of a shot. 2. Is it just a hunter wantin to say, "look at me, I made a 400 yard shot.

If it is #2, as I originally said, you can get that feedback from a target.

Maybe I just interpreted your original post wrong but it just seemed like you were saying, "Hey, I'm gonna make a 400 yard shot on a deer, just because I can." Lots of folks can make that shot & lots of folks have wounded deer on a 400 yard shot.

Also, if you've hunted deer for 39 years, I would think you would be able to get a little closer to em than 400 yards which leads me to believe you are just wantin to say, "Hey, look at me, I just made a 400 yard shot.

Oh yeah, my weapon of choice is a Browning Micro-Medallion in 7mm-08 loaded with Speer 130gr Spitzer pt. boattails, 41.5grs of Accurate Arms 2520 powder, Leupold scope that is sufficient for hunting deer in Tn.

I was formerly a Pro Staffer with Hawke Optics. They make a decent economical scope. I still have connections with Hawke & can get scopes at 60% below retail. I hunt with one of their scopes on my crossbow.

Good luck with your hunting & I sincerely hope you pull off that 400 yard shot. It is a great feeling to accomplish that goal.

Actually I have a confession to make. This will not really be a deer rifle. I am setting it up for zombies. It won't matter if I gut shoot them.

i shoot a 243 and have taken deer as well as other animals at 400 + yards some ran some droped in their tracks a few was taken in 10-15mph wind
