I just bought a new 587ci hd di unit. Fished the wire from the Transom, up through the boat, got everything tightened down and mounted the unit... the unit turned on and worked for a couple seconds and went black/turned off. I got the unit to run through simulation mode for a minute then cut off. Turned the unit on again and the screen has bars of colors that move and across and it seems to be doing something but it looks prism lines. I cannot power the unit off using the power button. I am very frustrated with the whole situation.

- I run the power through and accessory switch... could a lack of power be causing these issues?

- How do you all power your unit? To the TM batteries or direct to cranking battery? I know enough about electricity to be dangerous, that is it.

- I am hoping there is an easy fix and it is something I am doing wrong??? but the powering off issue doesn't make me optimistic.

- The boat is not in water which shouldn't matter but no idea?

- Can a lack of power damage the unit?

Hoping someone can help or give me some troubleshooting tips.

Thanks.

Brett

It does sound like low voltage to the unit. You want to power your unit from the cranking battery (less interference on the unit) by running a direct connection. The unit is protected from low voltage and will automatically shut down. It could also be a poor connection somewhere that is intermittent. Try the direct wiring first. It still could be other problems, but you will have to check the voltage if you continue to have problems.

Thanks Eric! I was leaning towards power being the issue but it was cold and had been a long day. We are trying to get the boat in order for the long haul to Tenn. in less than 4 weeks. Hope to see you on the water. I'll give it a try tomorrow and let you know how we make out.

Sometimes my cranking battery gets a bit week and when I start the motor my console unit does the same thing. I have to unplug it and restart the unit. It has a low voltage cutoff.

We ran a wire directly from the cranking battery to the unit and it worked with no issues.

I would like to put a fuse/reset on the wire to prevent any overpowering? What amp fuse do you guys use or recommend?

Thanks again for all the help.

Glad it took care of the problem! Look on the Hummingird website to find the handbook and specs for the unit if you don't have yours. It will give you the proper fuse size.

Thanks for the help guys! really appreciate it. 3 1/2 weeks to prep the boat, trailer, and gear for the long trip down.

Thanks for all the help again.

Brett
