Ok another part down in the history books, and another step closer, to completing the glass

I removed the Floors and foam yesterday afternoon and today 6 hrs in that part, next is the transom, and stringers to remove, then grind all the glass round these areas so that no glass and resin will stick, this has to be BONE dry and very clean ( no oil silicon etc..) before resin and glass will adhere to the old glass properly.
after all that I will make new stringers and transom, and glass all that in and put in new foam flotaion, but using as much of the old as I can.
The flotation foam , is 2 part urethane foam about $70 for 2 gallon at Advanced Plastics in Ooltewah. After that I will cut the wood for the deck, dry fit it , then put 2 coats of glass on back and 3 on top. Then Glass that all in. Then I get to put the top back on

Hopefully if the weather holds out I can be done with glass within the next 3-4 weeks , would be sooner if I could work on it 8-10hrs a day

NRG, that is a ton of work. 3weeks at 8hrs a day is minimum 120hrs @ $10/hr Thats $1200 you have put in that boat in labor, i guess if you like it though its not really work.

It would be more like $20/hr just to get someone to do all that plus a shop charge. That's a lot of hard work to get all that done and at this point it's just a start. It will be something to be proud of when finished with all the work involved, emoThumbsup emoThumbsup
What's the final color going to be emoQuestion
Be sure you keep Spur & EricM away from it 'till you get it finished so they can't leave any jinx on it for you to seal in, emoUpsmile emoBigsmile

NRG looks stuuuuupendous!! thanks for keeping us updated. Something to be proud of

Hey Geek, I understand about having it dry and all when you glass everything, but have you thought about using a pressure washer to strip all that stuff during this part of the process?

you have to sand it any way, so pressure washer is not much use

I ain't gonna have 8 hrs a day in it and prob wont work on it ever day any way .. right now , I can get the stringers and transom out in about 8 -10 hrs, make new stringers, transom and floor in maybe 4 -6 hrs, 4-6 hrs of grinding and , and once all that is done prob have it back in 10-15 hrs max, then the top goes back on .. prob good 8 hrs getting all back together. prob total of 45-50 hrs to get it all back together.. even doing all the other stuff I'm gonna do besides the hull work .. have you priced a glass bass boat new without a motor ?

Even a boat that looks good and feels solid .. if it has wood .. it has rot somewhere in the inside festering away if it was $200 0r $20,000 still has rot .
Ive yet to see a boat in the era of wood structures in boats that don't

This boat will be better than it was when new, sure will be built a heck of alot better than when the factory slapped it together .. and I do me slapped .. the stringers only had glass up to the level of the foam, they just painted resin over the rest of the wood, the floor only had glass on one side, the bottom just resin, the cross supports for floor had no glass only resin, the ribs between the stringers same thing except the had a layer of glass over them to hold them in place, but the ends where wide open.

Unless you've seen them build your boat from the mold up you really have no idea how boat makers throw this stuff together, I'm surprised they make it as long as they do before they rot out . but then if they did build it they way they should it would cost 2 -3 times what they do.
Most boats today are wood free, but composite boats have lots of issues too.. de-lamination is a big problem, the materials they use in floors and transoms are mostly foam cored boards with glass over the foam, some coosa boards, or a few others .. they still have to produce a boat that wont last too long or you would never buy another.

Basically if you own a boat Glass, Plastic, Aluminum or what ever. you own a money pit lol .. but at least my money pit will be built right this time.. and will still be much cheaper than a new boat , and will last me much longer than I will need it to , cause I'm sure another boat will catch my eye ... and I'll be off on a new project in a few years.

Shoot, at this rate you will be done with yours before me and I am alot further along on mine and not putting hardly anything back in!!!! Have you decided to paint or gel the top? I should have some grey or silver.
