Oil Bath Hubs

Glad to see this thread. This is an issue that I have been worried about. You will have to excuse my ignorance/terminology concerning this. I only know so far what I have heard while at WBT txs mainly due to my practice partner and I having some trouble.

The first day of practice in KY I jumped in the truck to drop her in the water. She kept looking and looking at something on the trailer, told me to get the boat off the ramp, and shared that we had problems. A bearing cap(?) was missing. So she pulls out the replacement kit and the new one won't go on. Long story short, a bass caddy (husband) that had just dropped his wife in the water offered his help and 1.5 hours later he had replaced the whole bearing system. Once he dug into it, everything was messed up. She was lucky to have had a safe trip from Louisiana to Kentucky. She had broken down the year before returning home from a tx and had that whole axle replaced with the oil bath hubs. She now plans to replace the other axle. She is very smart mechanically and keeps everything maintained, but things still happen.

I guess my point is that the oil bath hubs are well worth having. I have listened to many conversations on the topic and it seems to be the way to go now. So I have trailer maintenance heavy on my mind. I'll be studying this thread closely. Thanks to you guys for sharing advice.

I called Ranger this afternoon to see if there was an alternative recommendation for the 50W. I was told by the trailer department manager that they use Valvoline straight 50W HD (non-synthetic) and didn't offer a substitute. He was surprised that it was hard to find in our area saying that you could find it at any parts store in Arkansas.

That's a good idea Wormhook......I'll see what he says about that.....Redbone, wish I had talked to you about this earlier.....certainly you could get some!!!!! I wasn't thinkin!!!

Nice thread and info folks! I didn't even know they had such things. I've been very lucky with the bearing buddies on my 1985 trailer, keep 'em greased properly, and I've not had a problem (yet) even though I've been putting about 150 to 200 miles a week on for the last 3 years. Sounds like something I should look into (and I think I'll grease 'em again in the morning!). Thanks again!

I was able to pick up straight 50 weight at Advanced Auto Parts. It is hard to see so I had to ask the guy working there, they only had one brand it was valvoline racing oil.

Here's something else guys....my owners manual also advises to use Stainless Steel Never-Seize when reinstalling the set screw (drain). Anybody got any of this lying around the house (hahahaha) or know right off who might have it.....gonna start calling a few auto parts stores today and maybe Tractor Supply!!

xroadsbasser, I found a parts store that could get the ss anti-seize. Unfortunately you have to take a 12 can case, my cost - $136.00.

Thanks Gary. I'll pick some up.

I'm glad to see you posting. Was worried last night when the tornado hit Kimball.
