Poll - Minimum Boat Distance While Fishing

Chattanooga Fishing Forum

Help Support Chattanooga Fishing Forum:

I'd say about two weeks is too close. Stay off my water and don't sore mouth my fish.

Just kidding......... emoBigsmile

That is about how it happened but Joe is just giving you guys a hard time. He knows the whole story. Generally 50 yards is ok. Anchors don't have anything to do with it since most bass fishermen don't use anchors.

Fishheadspin - 9/5/2007 12:16 PM According to Beetlespin, Bbass and flip1up think about 20 feet is a good distance.

I feel like I was invited to a party and then accused of crashing it.

i was just yanking your chains! FLip i am sure it would not be the first party that you have crashed!!!

We are preaching to the choir here ,but, I voted 100 vds. Pleasure boaters and particularly those in pontoon boats don't seem to mind rocking my world if I am working a point.Other fisherman usually practice the golden rule.

I must say that it is good to hear the opinions of several fisherman about this issue. I'll be sure to keep my distance. Is there anything a person can do if someone starts fishing in their hole? There ought to be a law or something. I heard of a guy who pulled out his 9mm and shot the boat wizzing by. I don't recommend that, but hey things like that are bound to happen in Meigs County.

I voted 100 yards.

Last weekend we were fishing a tx out of B & B Marina and got "cut-off" by a pontoon boat. We were about 50 yards, or less, from dry land fishing a point with feeding fish. They didn't have their big motor running, but they trolled between us and the shore. To beat all they were flipping too. No apology - No nothing. They acted like we weren't even there. The feeders went away just as the pontoon did. Being president of CATCH Ministry requires I be cordial, but turning the other cheek when someone is just plain rude is tough.

Wow! After reading all the post most all have valid points. If you are fishing with buddy's distances not a problem but when dealing with public Jon Q that rents a boat once a year the next county is not far enough. Just like all the time i spend on the road, you find some drivers courteous and you find some not.

I've always enjoyed flipping a Texas-rigged worm or lizard up onto something and then letting it plop off into the water. Drives fish crazy, and nabs their attention due to the natural sounds and presentation it creates. A dynamite method, as far as I'm concerned.

Course, if it gets tangled into the boat owner's tackle box, cooler, steering console or wife, that can really mess things up. I usually cut off and re-tie and cast again.

As far as I'm concerned 50 yards is good . The way I look at it is , you're either fishing the right bait or not . If the fish are schooling , it doesn't matter if there are 2 or 10 boats on them. They still bite . Our Chickamauga fish are used to it . If you think otherwise , change baits. The boat traffic spooks shad , thus making the micropterus very active. Easy pickings. You boys need to get a large aquarium and study. Don't let the fish make you unhappy, just understand the habits of the fishes that your after. If I'm catching fish within 50 yds. or so and you're not .I think right person , wrong bait.emoAngel I regret if I have made anyone mad.

You must not have had a Chick cruse ship come by you @ 50 yards & send a wave 10 inches over the front of your boat. If you vote 50 yrds. every man on the Chick. will be running 50 ft. from you.

And Zack I know you've had that happen fishing with Eric in that Bullet.  And Tarheel thats too funny. I was thinking of a good use for my old braid off of my frogin reels. Maby an old rod with an old floating crank? I hear that braid does wonders for the seals on a foot?

100 Yards
I respect anyone that is settled in and I think they have rights to fish the area if they are there first. But I would expect the same. But you always don't get what you expect. 50 yards I think is just a little close it's kinda hard to judge distance on the water and I don't want to take a chance and get hit in the head with a crankbait.

It depends on the lake as to how much a berth to give another fishing boat. Some lakes If I see another boat working a stretch of "structure" I'll go elsewhere, other places I might pass within 30 yards of the side of the boat they are not fishing from to go up and follow them down the bank. I have a surface lure tied on at least one rod all the time. I'll let anybody crowding my fishing space to determine if I can reach them with it. If I am working the deep side and the other seat is working the shore shallow side oncoming boaters should be able to see where your casts are landing and adjust course accordingly.
Generally fishing space intrusions bother me much less than the newbie boat owner that somehow can take up two launch ramps and after getting the boat in the water discover those thingies with the hooks are still attached to the trailer and boat and ohh look water is filling the bottom of the boat.

My name is Trey Evans and I am new to the Forum but not Chatt. I like how local fisherman can get on here and tell lies about there day on that Chick. i love being on the water no matter how cold or hot it is. If any of you guys would like to go fishing for cats, bass, or crappie send me an e-mail and we'll give it a shot.
