Poll - Which is more important - Skill or Luck?

Chattanooga Fishing Forum

Help Support Chattanooga Fishing Forum:

I've never heard another fisherman ask, Are you having any skill ?

I think it's some of both. If a fish decides to move from point a to point b and I'm fishing in the middle of his path thats luck. If I present a lure that triggers a strike, that's skill. If I locate fish on structure and entice them to bite, it's skill.

Then there are those days that any fish I catch is pure LUCK !emoScratch

It's not considered a catch untill you get'em in the net. Then you got to keep them alive. All this while your trying to keep a boat from breaking down. I'll take the luck!!!

Skill will put more fish in the boat than luck ever will. Remember the old Hee Haw song - "If it weren't for bad luck, I'd have no luck at all". That was my theme song until I learned how to fish.

Every crappie or striper that I catch, I consider it a matter of skill. If I accidently hook a fish in the tail (I've done that before) I consider that luck. If you are skillful, you will create your own luck. My .02. emoBigsmile emoGeezer

I not speaking of my own fishing skill, but it seems to me that if you are skilled enough you create your own good luck.emoSmile

So correct me if I am wrong, you guys that believe in luck would say that Clunn,Brauer,Martin,Iaconelli,VanDam,Dance and Drumking and the like are just more lucky than the average guy. Sorry but I can't/won't buy that one. emoScratch
I can just see Rick Clunn calling up the psychic friends hotline right before a Bassmasters Classic and asking "Will I have any luck in this tournament"

The reason most fishermen ask other fishermen "have you had any luck today" is because that is how they fish and how they live. Personally I believe that everything happens for a reason. Sometimes we will not know what that reason is and might not find out in this life. JMHO

Cheez

Gosh, Cheez, don't include me in that group of pros. They all have sponsors and new boats. I have neither at the moment. emoBigsmile Let me tell you what I'm proudest of this past year. In no certain order: All the great guys and gals that I have met and had an opportunity to fish with. I was especially pleased to have 2 great Crappie days with Polo. His reports since that time has really made me proud. I almost feel like a "new" dad. Seeing the excitement and joy on TT's face as she learned a new fishing technique and catching some big slabs is something that I will never forget. FishinVol was a joy to be with and he taught me something as well.

MrWhiskers is an unbelievable fisherman and a great man to share a boat with for a day. Gator, Fishinfool, Shocker, 2jigs, and others have shared time with me and for that I am thankful. Of course my old friends, MadBomber and Fat Albert have added more to my life than can be mentioned. I have especially enjoyed my brief times with Cheez. Great fellowship with the Lord and we actually caught a lot of fish together.

The picnic last year was a blast. I am really looking forward to it again this year. Better than any family reunion that I have been to. Although I didn't get to fish with Tileman, I did get to see him below Watts Bar dam and shared some info that I believe helped him catch his first 20 pound striper. Now he's hooked!emoBigsmile

I want to fish with more of you in the coming years. The relationships that we develop as we share our common love for fishing will be rewarded in more than just learning how to catch fish in the future. Til then...emoGeezer

Of course we all know that DHaun is the CEO of CFF... but I nominate drumking as "President." All in favor, say "aye." emoThumbsup

It is all Luck for the Pros, No skill required. They are Lucky to be able to fish all the time, Lucky to get paid to fish, Lucky to get free boats to get them to the fish, Lucky to recieve free fishing gear, Lucky to be able to find fish, Lucky to have all that free stuff to catch enough fish to keep their sponcers happy. Just plain Lucky to be who they are. No skills required.emoCool

Your right liveliner it must be nice to be lucky like the pros but its just like nascar if you ain't got the skills to perform the task your sponser is paying you money to do. Then you are gone so you have to have more skill than luck. Not every so called pro angler gets there boat for free they have to buy them, they just get discounted prices on them.

I have always been of the opinion that it can take luck to win a tournament. However for the pros and those that catch them on a regular bases and for the ones that finish in the top ten on a consistent level that takes skill. I could use a little more skill and wished I had a lot more luck.emoBigsmile Jmax
