Yup, yup! Got access to a 270, 30-30, 30-06, and something else...can't remember.

So we'll see how the chips fall, I suppose.

Yea Mark..we are reading just fine. Point is, everyone has an opinion and I for one am glad to have asked these same questions a few years back. It actually changed my mind on some things too. Looks like he is reading as well here too. :)

Hey Billy..........hows the trailers??? LOL

I asked them too but over the years I went the other way. Ive shot deer with with 30/30 , 30.06, .308, and a .300 Win Mag, and all ran at least 50 yards, and I made a recovery. The last two I shot with a 25.06, and both fell in thier tracks literally.

Funny now that I think about it, the .308 kicked the worst. The .300 win mag, was more like a shove.

The "shove" is sorta how i feel about the 30-6 vs 270. 270 had a jolt to it and the 30-06 was more of a hard shove. I debated these two calibers for a few months then caught a good deal on my 30-06 and couldnt pass it up.

I do hear great things about the 25-06 versus the 243. If Olivia had not liked my rifle so well, I might have gotten one.

The trailers arent what they used to be bud. S---L----O----W!

There is no substitute to correct bullet placement. Get a gun that you can shoot well that you are comfortable with and have confidence in. With the advancements in bullet technology the 243 is way more than enough for any deer in north America.

I have read a number of things were people who went on trips to Canada were shocked at how popular that round is up there do deer hunting. Shoot a quality bullet and put it in the right place and you will have a dead deer with little to no tracking.

To each their own on what they are happy with.

A 20ga shotgun can be had cheap and is the most versatile weapon mentioned so far. They can be had cheap, shoot deer, turkey, coyotes, squirrel, birds, ect. Just pick your shell! With a little practice you can easily kill a deer at 150 yards and a little brush in the way doesn't matter.

You would deer hunt with a slug not buck shot. I would at least give it a "shot". When that deer walks out and your heart is pumping in your throat you won't notice any recoil. I'm willing to bet a mild 20ga slug isn't much worse than a 243. On another note the heavier the gun the lighter the kick. It really makes a big difference. It would be nice to shoot a deer with your grandfathers shotgun!
Whatever you do get what you want and you will be happier with your purchase.

I started out with a 410 moved to a 20 ga. I slid my big boy pants on, learned to skin a deer and got a 12 gauge and a 300 mag. Ive shot cases of shells and never had my arm so sore I couldn't function. When your focused on the target you forget about how hard is the weapon is going to recoil.

Wiggles is right. I killed my first deer at 4 years old with a 243. By 12 was shootin a 30-o6. I myself have shot all different guns over the years and hunted with them. In my opinion a 270 is yhr best hunting rifle there is. But if you hunt bigger animals I would preffer a 300 win mag. But can't go wrong with a compound bow

If you get a chance, try a 280. Although the ammo may be tough to find at times, you will be pleased with the recoil and range.</p>

Jason and my dad both shoot a .280 and they both kill deer with them. From what I've seen I would not hesitate to shoot that round at a deer.

if it was me i would leave the 30/30 to the 5 year olds the 270 will kick fairly hard but will put them down fast if it is a good shot the 243 is a good flat shooter will pput them down and will work well on coyots bobcats and such the others are to big i often use a 223 if the round hits the mark the 223 works great i would advise you to shoot a bunch of guns and see what you like good luck

A 243 is a fine caliber with a quality bullet and proper placement. As a younger fellow, I took many deer with a 6MM but I also lost a few. Wanting something with more energy, I bought a 30-06 that I had great success with for many years, but like you, I did not enjoy shooting the thing. I bought a used 270 on a whelm and have fallen in love with the caliber. Yes, there is a little more kick than a 243 but not near as much perceived kick as the 30-06. The 25-06 and the 260 are also great calibers and if I can find what I consider a good quality one at a bargain, I'll add them to my arsenal. This is just my opinion, but I generally recommend a 243 or 6MM for youth's. For adult's, I recommend something with a little more energy as long as they are comfortable. SHOT PLACEMENT is the most critical aspect and an individual cannot be concerned with the kick if he/she is going to shoot their best.

emoTeacher .........shot placement...yep. I use to hunt with a young fellow that shot a 6mm. I don't think he ever had to shoot twice. They generally fell in their tracks. Myself, I use a Remington .260, love it. Drawback...finding shells can be a problem. I have a friend that reloads for me.

I have killed many good Bucks and did at one time shoot a 243 with hand loads.. Factory loads in 100 grain do well but seldom if ever make an exit wound... Therefore Little to No Blood trail to track a shot deer. No question the 243 can deliver the Power and have superior accuracy but, If you do not hit vitals you stand a good chance of never finding your Deer.
I found and loaded 95 gr Nosler Partition Bullets. They were super fast, accurate and very effective in producing a fine exit hole. I can say I never lost a deer with the Partitioned bullets. Now I shoot the top deer caliber the 270 win. I load 140 Gr Nosler Partition Bullets and could not imagine any better performance. I just have no confidence in long range 30 cal bullets in anything less than 300 win. But you do not need that kind of "Overkill" for whitetail deer. My go to gun for advancing the range would be a 7MM Mag. Basically the same 27 cal as I now use but with after-burners..
