Power Poles?

Imo, heck yes. I love mine. I would definitely be lost without them. Kind of like having a parking brake on your boat. I have two 8 footers and like I said I love them, I wished I would have went with the 10s. But I would have had trouble getting in my garage.
 
As the saying goes, to each his on. But I just don't see the benefit in them. I have watched and most of the time when the pros are in town they only use them at the docks to hold their boat. Well a good $7.50 dock rope can handle that! Then to me they are in the way of the guy in the back of the boat trying to fish. The only time I see a benefit is during the grass / frog bite window and that is only good for about 10 weeks or so. I would much, much rather have one of the new trolling motors with the spot lock feature that will hold you in place regardless of the water depth. You can spot lock in 50 fow if you want to. Those new trolling motors cost about the same or even less than the power poles. Now with all that being said, if I was in Florida, fishing the shallows and grass, I would probably have them. JMO!

Power Poles and Talons are great shallow water anchors; BUT for around the same price as two of those you can get a I-Pilot trolling motor with spot lock which is a great anchor at any depth!! Why purchase something for 8 foot or less when you can get the same thing for any depth range? Just my two cents, but the popularity of shallow water anchors was before the invention of i-Pilot and GPS
 
They're great when you need them but they're in the way for backseater and slow the boat down when you're not using them. 75% sure, I'd get them again

They do have a battery powered pump but use the start battery for power....no battery killing power draw but if a battery is weak, it has to be bad

Spot lock isn't a replacement for power poles. Power poles are for shallow water and you don't want trolling motor running any more than you have to while there, for a couple reasons.
Spot lock should be the next great thing that's already here. I just wish Lowrance and MK were teamed up

Get the brackets for the 10 footers even with 8's. They're much more stable. they're 4 pieces vs 2
 
Trust me i was like you guys at first. The good news is if you don't like it you can easily sell it for a small loss. After getting one I would never have another boat or kayak without one. I have a 21 foot boat and a 10ft Power pole blade and it doesn't hurt fishing on the back of the boat at all. You get use to fishing with it. The smart Trolling motors are great but using them constantly will wear the battery out faster.
 
Anyone lost a fish due to having he poles down and a fish run you or partner around the back of the boat don't think you could reach around with the rod may cost a fish I chose to not go with them just due to the limited time they would be used just my .02
 
If I had the money to buy them, shoot yeah I would get them. But, I fish to much! Also I have an older boat and those things would look stupid on my boat. Now, there are two alternatives that are way cheaper, But don't look near as cool. You got the minn kota deck hand which will raise and lower a 20-40lb anchor with a push of a button. It's like 250- 350 bucks. The deck hand is pretty sweet, just not sure where I would mount it.

Another option is http://dig-in-anchors.com ___they have the mounts already made that go on your motor or boat. Issue here is the poles don't break down.

And here is the site that you can get the pieces and make it custom lengths. You could have two five foot poles and just screw them together or have 4 - 5 foot poles and then you could have 10fter's on both sides and you never have to have the feeling of, Man I wish I had gotten 10fter's over the 8fter's. I've been thinking of doing this myself.

I personally am not a fan of powerpole. I don't like the fact that you loose so much space in the boat for the pumps. some guys are having to put the pumps in the back storage boxes, invariably youre gonna get hydraulic fluid in the box and on anything else that's in the box with them. I still don't understand why power pole hasn't figured out a valve system to run 2 poles off one pump, then I might actually consider them. until then im looking at talons, they are all electric, can fold them down onto the deck to get under low bridges or into garage. or you can easily disconnect them and take them off when you don't think you'll need them. in the meantime I fabbed a bracket that mounts on my motor and got two 8' fiberglass rods and anchor the boat manually when I want to for about $20.
 
I Have been in a Boat that has Power Poles with them Down The Guy in back has to Really watch when trying to get a Fish in working around the poles. I Have The spot Lock on my Boat and Love it set it and walk away I Have run it all Day and Never had Problems with the Batteries. I Guess everyone has a Different Opinion and Use, the Spot lock works best for me especially on the River Ledge fishing.
 
The dig in anchors are a neat idea. Seems great for a smaller boat without all the cost. I think I will look further into them instead of power poles.
 
Power poles in Spotlight trolling motors don't even compare. Guys that think spot lock trolling motor will work in place of power poles must not be flipin docks or blow down with them. For that application they do not compare.
 
I'm a shallow water fisherman and would be lost without them. It allows me to sit in a spot and thoroughly fan cast and cover all the water within cast distance. Sight fish with no disturbance of the trolling motor and risk of spooking the fish. Retying or changing up baits without drifting off your spot. Fishing in the wind. Docking the boat without having it rub against our gel coat gouging nail infested docks we have around here! If you do decide to get them, I would recommend two. Make sure you check all the bolts and nuts periodically, because they will get loose over time. But, I would love to have the new Ultrex also. They both have their place and purpose IMO.
