i don't know if anyone has ever ask this question before,if it has im sorry for duplicating. i have been to a few tournament weigh in's and i noticed how some of the fishermen release their catch by throwing them, sometimes from some distance from shore. i does'nt seem to be wide spread, but if we are trying to preserve our sport by catch and release should'nt there be a way to teach these certain people that releasing these fish in this way could harm them especially during spawn season.just wondered what your thoughts are on this . and no i don't belong to peta ,i just like to fish emoScratch

I don't think you'll see that type of fish release at a BASS sanctioned tourney, they go to a lot of effort to keep the fish in good condition till they release them.

I watched the weigh in at a tournament on Nottely once .The fisherman had no interest in the fish after they got them to the scales. The guy doing the weighing walked over to the edge of the water and dumped the fish onto the gravel in about two inches of water like they were potatoe peels.Nobody cared if these fish survived.Very few ,if any,of them did.The fish were simply a means to an end; a token in a game to be discarded at games end.If this offends anyone ,I'm glad.Maybe they will try to improve their behavior.if anyone doubts that this is what happens at these local tornaments ,just go watch for yourself in a casual way without letting anyone know what you are looking for.

Fishog, welcome to the forum. I don't think you will see crap like that from the people on this forum. It makes me sick to see it and it is a waste no matter what anyone says. Keep fishing and making those reports, again glad to have you.

welcome to the forum. I am glad you joined us! I feel the same way you do about fish at the weigh in. It makes you wonder what people are thinking sometimes.

to the forum, fishhog. We have discussed treatment of tourney-caught fish at length on the forum. We are also becoming more aware of delayed mortality of tournament caught fish through various studies. This appears to be a very serious issue during the summer months.

This forum is a great place to share fishing knowledge. And, I hope we use it to make all of us better educated on fishing conservation issues.

I've seen this behavior at nearly every tournament I've fished (smaller local tx especially). I will never tournament fish again unless the traditional weigh-in in abolished. Unfortunately, due to the the money involved and the potential for cheating, "paper" and/or "photo" tournaments will probably never catch on. Its just another example of a resource being compromised in pursuit of the almighty dollar.

I can say from fishing small club tournaments for nearly ten years now that unfortunately this does go on with some. I think that is why I have become a believer in weighing in fish as quickly as possible and getting them back into the water in a safe way, not throwing them from ten yards away. I had my first fish die in a livewell in five years this fall, and it literally made me sick that it died.

Welcome to the forum!

I do not agree that ALL TX fisherman are guilty of this type behavior, and none of the CFFers I could see doing this. Our group here is propably one of the most conservation minded group around. Discusion of such ideas and values, breeds more conservation just as we have observed on this forum. We just had a Spotted bass TX at Riverpark on Saturday for two benefits. 1) Help reduce the overpopulation of spots, which are degrading the smallmouth and largemouth populations, and 2)ALl money went to the Riverrescue for thier clean-up efforts.

On a side note, if I did witness that type of behavior, i would not hesitate to say something to the people doing it, or call TWRA on the spot to report wanten-waste. It is illegal to treat fish with diss-regaurd and just toss them back in the water, knowing they wont survive.

emoWelcome Fishhog !!

Thanks for bringing that topic back to light. In doing so, maybe it will help point out to the offending txer's that it's not acceptable to the general public or other conscientious fishermen. I've not witnessed it myself, but from the reports it does happen and it's a shame to see a resource treated that way. I'd rather see the fish given to someone to eat than to see them carelessly thrown back into the water to die.

Keep in mind that a lot of tx fishermen do everything possible to keep their fish alive and return them to the water in good health.

A great thing about CFF is fisherman education. Personally, I wouldn't confront someone doing this, you never know how they may react. I would tell them about what a great fishing resource CFF is and hope they would join and become more aware of fish mortality and how their actions are seen by other anglers. Learn and spread the word.

Fishhog how many tournys. did you say you went to? I've been to over 100 in the past year or two and might have seen somthing like this one or two times at other tournys. How about people fishing with live bait? letting the fish take the hook all the way down in the throat, pulling the float under. No one ever sees them. Or post about that for that matter. I'd say 99% of the tourny. fishermen treat their catch like gold all the time, in a tourny or not. I think it is just easy to see what tourny. fishermen do & not everyone else. Besides the 5 fish limit is designed to withstand every fisherman keeping his five fish catch & not hurt the lake. What about all the $$$ TWRA gets from the tourny. fishermen from licenses? And the boost to the local economy? I've seen non-tourny fishermen treat fish badly alot more than tourny fisherman. Not many but still more. And I'm on the water 5-7 days a week. I'm not putting anyone down in any way. But a post like this has a way of snowballing in to bashing tourny. fishing. And I can say without it I don't think you would have ever got a 15inch size limet on this lake (the Chick). And that has brought this lake back, way back. If fish were mistreated at our dogfight out of Harrison Bay on Thursday nights you can bet somthing would be said & or done right then & there! Our by-laws stat that the fish become property of the Harrison Bassmasters. And we do not run our tournys. that way.

i,m with you 2 jigs I have seen the evidence of the live bait fishing a one spot i found 10 to 12 good tx fish that was killed by not watching what they where doing. I my self fish alot of tx. and i do treat my fish like gold thats how all tx fisherman do.emoBang

man, you guys are great and the responses are amazing. i agree that telling others about cff will help to educate and promote better conservation along with our own actions.the link you gave was very informative fishinfool.im glad to see everyone here is very supportive in taking as much care as possible of something that brings happiness to all emoAngler

I tournament fish, not to get rich, but because I enjoy the competition. Why would I do something to negatively affect the resource that provides this enjoyment!?

I same the same thing to people who dont understand hunting. Thats another thread...

Most of the guys I know who fish tx's treat their fish better than they treat themselves, me included! If you see someone throwing a fish in a way that would hurt the fish, you should say something! I'm not trying to get this topic boiled up again.

Welcome to the forum!

the reason you see a tx fisherman take and toss his fish he is trying to get the fish in deeper water .I myself have done it and never had a fish bellie up on me .Sometimes when they put the fish in easy they will turn and swim right back to swallow waters everytime.

Action, I dont know if I have ever seen the experts say to throw the fish out to deeper water, I thought that I had alwys seen them very gently release them back to swim where they may. I do know for a fact that research has shown that the fish doesnt have to go belly-up right away to have been over-stressed and die soon after release.

Madbomber had a couple great articles on this recently too.

And how many were killed that day from deep hooking with live bait that no one seen because they were threw back in the middle of the lake. Once again you take 50-60 boats (all in one place) & you pick up 3 dead fish? I rember that day & Wolftever ramp was full of fishermen. Very few drove across to the CBA's. Wonder how many deep hooked fish that day? Or the next when no one was around? Like Madbomber & or Rsimms has also posted about the five fish limits on this lake. They are designed so every fisherman could keep his or her limits & not hurt the lake.

Fishin Fool - 10/21/2007 11:13 PM

Welcome to the forum fishhog. Thanks for your posting! You'll find a lot of discussion in the archives about this very subject. There was a recent debate here:

http://www.chattanoogafishingforum.com/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=12511&posts=38

I read your post on that debate fishin fool!!

I just want to say that i am a fisherman both ROD and REEL and I am a die hard Bowfisherman....
Killing out the carp buffalo and gar help the bass reproduce in alot of ways...

bowfishing will keep control of these "ROUGH" species of fish!! When Bass or any other game fish for that matter, lay theyre eggs the carp and buffalo come in and stir up the water and the silt and mud rest on the eggs and they go dormant!!! Much less the carp com through and suck up the bottom along with the eggs!!

I truely belive that bowfishing has help Chickamauga and Nickajack since us very few bowfishermen have hit those bodysof water in the past 6-8 years!!

The CAG is determined to kill My beloved sport of bowfishing so that the VERY FEW carp anglers can have plentyfull fish, but I belive there are alot more bass fisherman that would rather see us out there killing out these BASS killing fish!!

Just thought i would post on this..... we need all the help possible before they get theyre way and the Game fishing go to the dumps again around here!!! Thanks for your support guys and hey....

ask a bowfisherman where the bass are.... we can see alot at night with our high wattage lights and let me tell you I see 6-8 pounders every night we go as well as where alot of bass are on any given weather pattern... well be glad to help you guys out in scouting just ask!!! Thanks guys here is my website please visit!!
