Image Interpretation isn't that much difference between brands. So I don't think switch brands is going to help you. I would recommend watching my video clips: http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLFBA73CD339FC6B95 and learning from these images or post some of your own and we will help you learn what you are finding. It's pretty simple once you learn but it takes a little learning curve...about like the change from a Flasher to a LCD.

If you want to see whats to the side of your boat , get a Lowrance . humminbird posts' many pics' on web sites, but in the real world ( not so good ) if you've ever owend one you would'nt walk across the street for another . IMO

Sorry, but I have to disagree with the last post. I have a HB998, friend has HD7. I wouldn't trade with him and he wouldn't trade with me-that's how close they are to doing the same thing. Also, to get the side imaging, he has to have a secondary box and wiring-all of HB is in one unit. Just my opinion.

Every picture I post is from the exact same unit you can purchase over the counter. Humminbird has been building and selling Side Imaging units since 2004. One thing you should look at the frequency between the units and coverage area. Most all my images are captured with 455kHz sonar which provides 180 degrees of sonar coverage from the water's surface to under the transducer. Humminbird also offers 800kHz which is higher detail but smaller coverage. Be sure you are comparing apples to apples and the number on thing is to match chart speed to boat speed to get the highest level of detail. This is very important when using it on the trolling motor and slow speed...Humminbird allows you the user to control the chart speed of Side Imaging which is the most important control to getting more from your unit.

Doug V this post is very informative. I love the vids you went to a lot of trouble with your tutorial and for that I thank you.
Maybe someone with similar skills can post some Lowrance images that would be a cool comparison. I have owned both brands in the past but I have to admit I am way behind you guys on the latest technology and a comparison would help me a lot with my next update.

great info thanks. How do you use your side scan to differentiate what kind of fish are present. I have been able to find a lot of fish but I have problems knowing if they are bass or not. Mostly i think I have been finding a lot of white bass.

With any sonar: 2D, DI or Side Scan you have to understand fish species seasonal patterns to help in species identification. That's a great question and I'll grab some images and start a new thread with positive images of different species and show what they look like and how they relate to structure and seasonal patterns to help identify them.
