I hate to say it but tennessee residents are missing out. You guys have great things around you guys. To the north you have kentucky-great deer in the 150-180 range, south you have Georgia-130-170 range depending where you are-Alabama has great deer-the belt allways produces big deer and the north is good too(I know of a 190 killed last year in the northern part of the state). I have hunted in the east and west of Tennessee and both have the potential to produce good deer but seldome do. If I lived in Tennesse I would hunt some where else. Maybe its just the way the regulations are set up but to me its worthless to hunt unless I am just going after meat, and even in that case I would go up north where I can kill larger does. JMO and would like to hear feed back.

DAMN ROADHUNTERS! MAKE THEM BUY A HUNTING LISCENSE LIKE WE DO....... TO BAD HE WOULD MADE A REAL NICE ONE NEXT YEAR OR TWO. emoHungry emoSorry

I WOULD LOVE TO SEE THE BUCKS AND DOES AROUND TENN GET BIGGER MYSELF.BUT IT TAKES ALOT OF HUNTERS LETTING THEM WALK AND THE GOV LETTING FARMERS FARM, AND THE POACHERS BEING CAUGHT, I KNOW THEIR IS ALOT MORE TO THIS BUT I'M JUST GOING ON MY EXP AND MY LISTENING TO OTHERS. emoScratch emoGeezer

Their are some good deer in tn I have kill some but if the state would crack down on these guys that kill more than their limit and lower the amount of bucks killed we all could kill some nices ones.I just cant get the guys in the club to let the average deer walk.

yes sir,,nice buck fer sure. that pic just got me in the mood for deer season,,my grandmother owns some land on signal mtn.. maybe i should be hunting there

It was a nice buck. The reason it looked small bodied was because the yotes got into it already. I would say the guys from the road dept now have a nice set of horns. It was stinking pretty good though.

jonathanfaith2 - 8/23/2010 10:51 PM I totally agree Basser

Damn Faith, You havent hunted Tennessee enough, or at least not on the right farm...to begin with, TN is nationally recogniozed for its record keeping of wildlife. We are one of the last few states that requires a physical check-in, and the US fish and wildlife is constantly applauding TN for having very accurate harvest records. I'll promise you that TN does not have any more road hunters and poachers than Georgia does. Its been shown time and time again that TN has a better age structure in its white tail heard than IL, KY, or GA. The difference is in the soil period. A 3.5 year old in the black belt of GA or in the river bottoms of IL will have much larger antlers on avaerage than the 3.5 from TN. I'll get off my high horse. I would say that more deer over 150" were harvested from Hamilton County last year than Catoosa and Walker put together...dont make me start posting pictures.

Check out these two threads from tndeer.com They make me feel good about our heard and what our wildlife agency has done to help make this a great state to hunt.

Justin,
those are some great charts and with the given information Tenn's deer heard should really take off. each state has areas that are not known for producing large bucks but please post a few picks and I will be happy to do the same:)

Here I was thinking Churly was gonna get on his high-horse about letting deer walk and he goes and suprises me! Churls is dead on, we have the best deer herd in the last 150 years in TN, BUT we will never have the number of giants roaming because of the soil issue he mentioned. We could stop killing deer for 5 years, it won't matter, yes you would have a temporary spike in larger deer available, but it wont make the overall heard increase rack size over their current potential.

One of the BIGGEST factors to improve your own herd, or the overall states heard is doe harvest. We simply do NOT harvest enough does as a goup in TN.
