Spur, the managment plan on our property is pretty simple and I know it works first hand because this will be the eighth season we have used this "plan" and we went from hardley seeing anything older than 1.5 years to last year where EVERY single time I climbed in a stand I saw a buck and, on average, would see a 2.5 year old shooter on every other sitting.

Our rule on bucks is simple; you shoot it you mount it. Our doe rule is; please shoot every one you can leagally that does not have spots on it. The past 2 seasons we have taken 5 bucks and 25 does. We always see deer and each year the number of mature bucks seen has increased. This has resulted in my hunting buddies being able to see so many bucks in a season they can afford to be choosy and I am really proud of the "shooters" that they have let walk because they understand the value of our managment plan. Example; last year I let two real nice bucks walk that I normally would have shot, including one real wide 7 point. Now that I have taken a very mature buck. The first thing I think of when i see a buck is, "how big would he be next year".

As far as habitat goes, I have tried to let as much sunlight hit the ground as possible, by clearing as many areas as I can. We also spend a lot of time and money on our Summer and Winter plots. I dont think I have enough food out to really increase weight and antlers but it does keep the deer around durring season and provides some nutrition to deer that dont live in an agricultural area.

If you cant tell I am fired up. We just built a cabin on our property and picked up an additional 425 acres that joins us to make our total huntable acres to about 1K! I am planting my winter plots here in the next few weeks....c'mon sept 25th!

Your on the right track for sure Justin, keep it up. Unfortunalty, THAT amount of work is what it takes to consisntlty harvest those big deer your getting in TN. The average club, or land-owner cant or wont go to that extreme. Certainly TWRA managed lands wont ever have that.
Those mid-western deer can get BIG on the average browse at hand, and the guys that are managing like you can grow some real monsters. Even public land deer can be bruisers!

Soil is a big factor but I believe the herd on the other side of the Ohio River has some genes tha our deer don't have. Look at the difference in the size of a Tennessee 3 month ole and a Illinois 3 month ole. As far big deer being killed in our area there are quite a few you never hear about that was killed legal.

just letting u know there was two 190inch buckes killed last yr in hamilton county they both grossed over 200inchs i think that they may have been killed on the same day i was told is they are #2 and #3 in the state i think

Genetics are imo the biggest factor in growing horns. Next is age. Have you guys seen the size of the mature does that are running around up north, its no comparision to southern baldies. The deer are just bigger not just the bucks. Big does + Big bucks = big bucks. I saw a pic of a buck shot in Blairsville Ga. in the mountains that you would not have believed. The deer was aged by the Ga. Dnr as a 7.5 year old deer it scored 180 and only weighed 146lbs. It was a freak to say the least. Its possible to grow huge deer in marginal habitat, you just never will have the numbers that are shot else where. My bro lives is southern wisconsin and average bucks there are giants here, and are routinely shot. Not because they are doing anything different because they have the stock. The 25th is close Get ready emoEnforce

that is a good deer for around here real close to 130, but the deer at the wal-mart at the foot of signal mountain were both killed off our farm at monteagle...dad and i harvested those two deer four years ago but were over 145 the eight was 152 and the thirteen was 196 non-typical last year we harvested two ten pointers that were 158 and 168..... its all about lettin em walk to get bigger....i dont care where you are if you have 5 acres or 5600 acres you have to manage your bucks and does
