Smallmouth ???

All of the Tennessee River tailwaters hold good smallmouths. Hit the water with a medium spinning outfit, 6 or 8 lb. line and a selection of small plastics. Good luck.

the best time for smallies is the fall of the year below the dams and i use stick baits and crankbaits

Thanks fish4thepeck Ill look that up and give it a read ... Im real intrested in smallmouth because Ive never caught one and I here all about how they are so much better than largemouths

I posted on the discussions page what I would do under a different thread. Good smallies can be had even in the hottest of summers but they are often deep, greater than 10 feet and if you don't downsize your line it's almost impossible to fish that deep and do it well in the current that they love. Let us know how you do.

Thanks polo-dog ... Im getting my smallmouth lures together and soon me and my bud Lil Mutt are going after some smallies ... hopefully I can post some pics even if they are small they will be my first smallies ... a guy told me the other day to put in at Chick dam and head toward the dam and people were catching smallies near the dam but Im not sure where he was talking about ?

There are some places near the dam where they can stack up. If it were me I would try fishing the fast/slow water interface, bumping lures on the bottom or with live bait. I've never done it there but in that fast/slow water interface there is an eddie where the fish will sit and not have to swim against current but the baitfish are swept past in the fast water and the predators go out into the fast water to eat but don't have to use energy to find the bait, it is brought to them.

THE #1 Key for catching smallies in the Chick tailwaters (The Riverpark) is don't fish the banks. If you are fishing the banks 99.9999% of the smallies are behind you. Find mid river structure and you cannot go wrong with tubes or large shinners.

Good luck.

Mr Wiskers is right for sure. When DK and I were out fishing two nights ago we talked about fishing off shore structure too. Beating the banks, whether it be in the lake or on the river is a sure way to not catch the best fish. Smallies are no exception. There will always be the guys that will do okay fishing the shoreline(MadBomber) but the offshore spots are less pressured too.

Thanks MrWiskers .... Thats good advice for me because I do enjoy fishing the banks but if the fish arent there then its nice to have a heads up on where to find them
