Is it a tooth patch you can feel or a brown / small blemish area? I've seen both.

Most states are recognizing the Meanmouth...a breed from Spots and Smallies. If they are brown with a true tooth patch, then that's what I believe we have here.

Spur, we going to do much more than our part ,catching 15 smallmouth for supper is a dream come true !!!

Top, I assume your just joshing us to make a point, but I understand your concern. Maybe TWRA will revisit the issue if enough folks raise cain at the meetings? Time to get Madbomber fired up! He is good at getting those guys to listen to sound ideas....

I'm already fired up! I have been pm'd by someone who thinks I had something to do with the decision to call a brown fish with a tongue patch a spot. I did not!!

I will not be keeping any "brown spots". Only "green" ones. Personally, I don't agree with the decision but I wasn't consulted. I don't have a problem identifying a spot. As for me and my boat, we will keep "green" ones only.

Oh, by the way, TW. If you and your buddy are really hungry, go to Norris. There is no limit on size or number there. You can keep hundreds of the little brown devils!!!

madbomber, i would love to invite u to go down and fish logan martin with us next weekend or sometime when u get free maybe we could go. if u want to have some real fun, go catch some big spots down there. u wont be eating them anymore after a trip down there. more fun than any SM up here. a 2.5 lb coosa river spot pulls like a 5lb SM. i love catching spots, just hope your choices dont impact my ability to catch them below the damn.

no personal jabs from me and i hope u didnt mean me. that was a serious invitation. i would like to go fishing with MB one day. u can always talk over your disagreements while catching fish. im not mad, we just have a difference in philosophy. nothing to fight over. :) or maybe u werent talking to me.

Jim, I am not sure who he is talking to. I was just thinking this thread was pretty civil considering the issue involved. Maybe he was just kidding??

No, not you Jim. There was another post after yours that was directed at MB. It has been deleted I suppose.

FishinVol is correct. There was an extremely slanderous remark that was done away with... Jim i feel your exchange with MB was good discussion, and no personal attacks were made.

It must have been mine because it is gone I think. I was NOT being disrespectful to MB I offered a suggestion to him. Y'all are a hoot out here. I personally thought he was getting too much heck from people mad at him because he admitted throwing them on the bank. "Raccoons gotta eat the same as turtles". Didn't Josey Wales say that? Nah, maybe it was something else.

If we had the same subspecies of spots below Chickamauga Dam that you have in Logan Martin, we would not be having this discussion. The Coosa River strain is a different critter. Every time you read of a 4 or 5 lb spot being caught in the Tennessee River, it's a spot/lm hybrid.

I have learned something in my short lived time out here. I need to go back to school and get a fisheries biology degree to be able to tell what I've caught.

i believe andy morgan caught one last yr that was 6lbs or so from chickamuaga. like i said they get big around here, u just gotta get them in the boat. or to solve it, why dont we just stock the ones from the coosa river. how much different can they be? i have caught some big ones around here. and i have caught a bunch 3lbs +. but maybe thats just me and im the only one that likes big spots and has caught big spots. im pretty sure that i got some friends that have caught them too. like i said, open invitation to go with me and catch some big spots. coosa river or since u say they are different we could go to lanier if the water ever comes up. many 4-6 lbers were caught there before the water crisis. just ask that guide, i believe his name is ryan coleman. he will tell u that many 4+ lb spots exist and if search the bfhp u will see his pics from previous years. also barry fraley has caught them below nickajack damn. no excuses, they get that big around here and they are fun to catch. tired of discussing it. good luck in killing them and good luck to me in catching and releasing them. its your license do as u wish. im not mad, just no need to beat a dead horse. like i said still an open invitation to go with me anytime we can get our schedules together one or two big spots and i will convert u. or maybe a big freshwater flounder (aka...drum). lol. emoLaugh

Ok guys... thanks for all the perspectives. Release them or eat them as long as you are legal. The horse is bloody, and split open!
