Well I hunt when I can and this time of the year it can get frigid cold.
I know there are a few that prefer to stay inside, but I don't. I've always tried to layer my clothes using wool and heavy cotton. It's fine until it gets to -20 and then I feel naked. Do you guys that are hardcore fishermen use any kind of insulated wind breakers or something?

When it comes to feet, I saw "Hot Mocs" boot covers on sale at bass pro but they dont have my size so I dont have any experience with them. But they look real good and at least is 1 more layer for your feet without feeling cramped in a boot. If anyone on here has used them and can add some insight I would greatly appreciate it because ive been thinkine about buying a pair. They also have a couple other products that are practical items with a built in pocket for hot hands. Im intrigued.

Gortex layered suits like the Cabelas guide were or Bass Pro 100mph are a must. Usually some good thermals and a hooded sweatshirt underneath I'm good. On really cold days when it's below 25 I'll wear 2 sets of thermals underneath.

I spend a crazy amount of time outdoors year round in some crazy weather. There a few things to keep in mind that will help

1. remember the word COLD. clean, (don't) overheat, layer, and dry. This is a good rule to start with. Keep your cloths clean so they will breath properly this goes for Gor-tex type clothes as well, do not over dress and or over heat. This will cause you to sweat which is bad in cold weather. Next layer your cloths and adjust layers as the temps and or your exertion levels change. Lose layers are better than tight ones. Tight cloths can hurt you in cold weather. Lastly stay dry or change out of wet cloths ASAP. This goes for sweaty cloths as well

2. Poly pro is an awesome base layed and is key in my opinion to staying warm. Get a set that matches how much you will be moving around. Light weight if you are moving. Medium to expedition weight for stationary sittings or below zero temps.

3. A Gor-Tex outer layer is a must mostly for its ability to block wind. I wave been in Alaska ice climbing in -10f temps and wore nothing but heavy weight poly pro top and bottom and a Gor-Tex top and bottom and was warm all day.

4 Cotten will kill you in the cold. If it gets wet it you are in trouble and it is not a warm fabric at all

5 polar tec is a great mid layer. Plus if it gets wet it will retain about 90% of its warmth keeping abilities.

6. Good boots, moister wicking socks, great cloves and a great head cover are extreamly important ad well. Those are the places you are most likely to get frost nip or burn. You lose a tone of heat from your head so insulate it well.

Shadow knows what he is talking about, stay away from cotton. I followed his and my brothers advice on how to stay warm and I reduced the layers just by buying the right thermals and gortex.

Wear light clothing that are warm and comfortable enough to wear into the woods. Get into your stand, pull out your sleeping Bag and pull it up onto your body.
I have German military sleeping bags with arms and a cross zipper so you can snap the back up and wear it walking. I have one in the rubber shell I use ih Ice storms that is water protected.
My feet never get cold nor do I. I never even have to zip it up. Just pull over the hood and cross my arms.
It keeps my heat in, the cold out and my scent inside the bag as well.
To heck with all those big coats and freezing toes...

I have used those Bags for over twenty years and have killed some good bucks even sitting on the ground. They are not alarmed by a green blob that does not emit human scent.

you can use hot hands and wrist bands or to keep your hands warm I do it when crappie fishing in the cold main thing is don't get to hot or you will sweat and then you in big trouble

Stay away from cotton it will freeze u to death. The newer fleece type fibers are better. Of course wool but it'll itch ur rear end off!

I like polypropolene next to my body. It wicks away any moisture from the body to the second layer of, preferably cotton, because it attracts moisture so well. After that, add enough layers to keep warm. One cold December day, I fell into the lake while wearing the poly suit. I exited the water and removed the outer clothing but did not remove the poly suit. It kept me warm and amazingly, I watched the water run off it just like it does on a plastic water hose. In just a few minutes, it was dry. Best of all, it kept me warm the whole time. Wearing just the navy blue suit, I loaded the boat and drove home. Nice and warm the whole time.

I have a Bass Pro 100mph suit and it is no longer water proof. I had it 5 years or more. Is there anything I can do to get it water proof again? Sucks getting wet in the cold.

Even with Gor-Tex products you need to reapply a water repellent to the outside of the garment. this will help the water bead up and roll off the jacket before it even gets to the gor - tex. I treat my jackets about twice a year.

Good boots, moister wicking socks...Can you give a little more details on the sock and boots. I stay warm for the most part when fishing not so much my feet. And it does not really have to be that cold outside (30's) but my feet still cold cold.

You have to have good circulation. You body will naturally slow blood flow to extremities as it sences you getting cold to help keep the heat in your core. So if you have on restrictive boots or socks it only compounds this. Less blood flow = colder feet.

If your feet sweat a good bit and you don't have moister wicking socks with insulated boots it's the same as taking a wet towel placing it on the ground in 30deg temps and strangling on it. Your feet will get cold. You want to pull the moister away from your feet so that they stay dry. Then you want to insulate with our constricting. Poly pro socks or sock liners with smart wool socks are great. I have pretty much just switched to all smart wool myself.

Cotten socks will freeze your feet
