Congrats on the kill TNdoe!!! cant wait for the report!!!

Just got back in town and thank goodness we have some cooler temps here as well. We left Wed afternoon after work and headed to Clay cty, Ill for the second season shotgun/mzldr. On our trip up we saw between 30 to 40 deer in TN in the fields before it got dark as we got close to Nashville. Two weeks ago at the end of the first firearm season we went and set a blind up by a dead fall to hunt out of this weekend so I got to my blind, set up and as the woods started to lighten up the wind began. It was already 24 degrees then add a 20 mph wind made the temp even worse. We sat for around 4 hrs and saw nothing not even a squirel. I kept receiving text from JSV and my brother in law periodically and neither could believe we hadn't seen anything, not even a squirrel. Went back in around 1:00 that afternoon and by close to 4, I was getting ready to send JSV a text to tell him to get the boat ready that I was over a deer (kinda like TN football sometimesemoRedface) when I looked into the horse pasture to see 2 does feeding. At that time I was hoping they would walk down the fencline towards me and at least might be able to take home a doe for the table. I looked at my watch at it was around 4:30pm so I knew shooting light was diminishing quick and at the speed the does were moving they might have made it to the fence corner by the next morningemoBang. I started hearing what sounded like a deer walking two different times but when I would stand up to look over the dead fall, nothing. After the 3 time I heard the footsteps in the leaves I knew there had to be a deer and when I stood again I could see a body and horns walking towards a ditch and one of our food plots. After hunting all of the first season and only seeing small bucks and a nice deer running 90 mph after a doe, this was my first opportunity to shoot a nice tall rack what I figured was an 8ptr. He stayed behind some thick bryers and bushes so I looked to the left to find a place to shoot as he walked through. So when I saw chest, I squeezed the trigger. Smoked completely filled that air as it always does with the smokepole but as soon as smoked cleared I couldn't see deer so I wasn't sure if I even hit him. The landowner was hunting with me so he called me on the radio and said he would get down and walk to the food plot while I kept my eye towards where he as standing when I shot. As he got to the food plot I asked hime to walk to the far end by a stump. As he walked I would ask him if he sees anything and he responded with all I see is a dead deer lying in the plotemoParty. Then the fun stopped and the work began. When you see the pics, he has one broken brow tine which would classify him as a possible 7. Didn't see alot of deer at all either weekend however that 1st weekend 2 weeks ago, Jimmystriton and his buddy Jeff went and Jeff shot a nice 9pt with a broken G2. The deer up there fight incredibly hard with each other and its not unusual to see broke tines during this time of year.

Great deer Kathy. I have a neighbor that was born and raised in Illinois but has lived in Georgia for 20 years. He says the outfitters buy up all the allotment for shotgun/muzzleloader hunts. If you don't mind would you tell me how you got the permit. I have several customers that own lots of land up there that have told me I can come hunt but they tell me the same thing. I don't bow hunt so I just let it go.
Thanks

cheez, we put in for the drawing's every year and have been lucky to get firearm permits for our county. They allot a certain number per county and have a residents only drawing in April I believe then non-residents can apply for any remaining in July or August. Each year there have been many left for non-residents and this year and abundant left over after the non-resident drawing........ I think the biggest thing that may keep people away is the $$$ if you hunt either sex bow, firearm, & mzldr you looking at $1000.00 which doesn't include any lease land........ of which also in some counties is absolutely outrageous (Pike cty-55 & 60$ an acre to lease).

This deer by far isn't as big as some I've seen up there going to a from the property. Hopefully next year we up the stakes to a 130 class or bigger. Unfortunately we have a neighbor up there that shoots any and all so it's gonna be hard not to shoot a deer of this caliber especially on our 100 acres.......

One of my customers is in Enfield but I am not sure of the county. He has a pile of sheds in his office and every one is 140-160 class deer. I have not seen them but he tells me that he has some mounted that are much bigger than the sheds. I can hunt there for free but I never tried to get any permits. I'm not into deer hunting like I used to be but I am not sure I would pay $1000 for permits to hunt a couple 3 day hunts. Years ago I would have but it is not a priority for me anymore.

Congradulation and nice buck. A few of my buddies and I were thinking about putting in for tags next year. I know some guy's who put in and hunt public land and they have killed some nice deer. But I don't know where it's at.
I have seen allot of nice deer that came out of IL.

emoWorthy Nice one there TNdoe...that deer looks huge next to that 6 foot ladder. How much did he weigh? emoThumbsup Jmax

JMAX-
He was fairly long with absolutely no fat on him when he was skinned out. Field dress weight was 150lbs which is not very big for Illinois deer. We figured him being a 2 1/2 yr old, don't think he was a 1 1/2 but based on his weight, I guess he could have been.....

Cheeze,

For the past 2 years IL has seperate tag drawings for the Outfitters and the rest of us. Meaning when you book an outfitter up there, you are guaranteed a tag. I hunt in White County IL, and the guys that hunt up there come from Indiana, they all get a gun tag every year. I payed $426.00 for a non-res. bow tag ( that includes your license and habitat stamp) Its an additional $250.00 for the shotgun/muzzl. tag. I never have had any trouble getting my bow tag on-line. To many, these tags seem expensive, but I know that the guys hunting accross the fence from me are paying $2750 + tag for 5 days of bow hunting with Southern Illinois Outfitters. I feel like I am getting a deal! If you like hunting big deer you need to take your buddy up on his offer!

TNdoe,

I would agree that is a 2.5 year old or better. I say he has too much mass and tine length to be 1.5. He probably weighed a bit more durring the pre-rut. Congrats again!

Thanks for the info Churly. It has been 3 years since I checked on any license up there. It is good to see that Illinois has changed the law about who can buy them.
