Just got back in town and thank goodness we have some cooler temps here as well. We left Wed afternoon after work and headed to Clay cty, Ill for the second season shotgun/mzldr. On our trip up we saw between 30 to 40 deer in TN in the fields before it got dark as we got close to Nashville. Two weeks ago at the end of the first firearm season we went and set a blind up by a dead fall to hunt out of this weekend so I got to my blind, set up and as the woods started to lighten up the wind began. It was already 24 degrees then add a 20 mph wind made the temp even worse. We sat for around 4 hrs and saw nothing not even a squirel. I kept receiving text from JSV and my brother in law periodically and neither could believe we hadn't seen anything, not even a squirrel. Went back in around 1:00 that afternoon and by close to 4, I was getting ready to send JSV a text to tell him to get the boat ready that I was over a deer (kinda like TN football sometimesemoRedface) when I looked into the horse pasture to see 2 does feeding. At that time I was hoping they would walk down the fencline towards me and at least might be able to take home a doe for the table. I looked at my watch at it was around 4:30pm so I knew shooting light was diminishing quick and at the speed the does were moving they might have made it to the fence corner by the next morningemoBang. I started hearing what sounded like a deer walking two different times but when I would stand up to look over the dead fall, nothing. After the 3 time I heard the footsteps in the leaves I knew there had to be a deer and when I stood again I could see a body and horns walking towards a ditch and one of our food plots. After hunting all of the first season and only seeing small bucks and a nice deer running 90 mph after a doe, this was my first opportunity to shoot a nice tall rack what I figured was an 8ptr. He stayed behind some thick bryers and bushes so I looked to the left to find a place to shoot as he walked through. So when I saw chest, I squeezed the trigger. Smoked completely filled that air as it always does with the smokepole but as soon as smoked cleared I couldn't see deer so I wasn't sure if I even hit him. The landowner was hunting with me so he called me on the radio and said he would get down and walk to the food plot while I kept my eye towards where he as standing when I shot. As he got to the food plot I asked hime to walk to the far end by a stump. As he walked I would ask him if he sees anything and he responded with all I see is a dead deer lying in the plotemoParty. Then the fun stopped and the work began. When you see the pics, he has one broken brow tine which would classify him as a possible 7. Didn't see alot of deer at all either weekend however that 1st weekend 2 weeks ago, Jimmystriton and his buddy Jeff went and Jeff shot a nice 9pt with a broken G2. The deer up there fight incredibly hard with each other and its not unusual to see broke tines during this time of year.
