Did anyone ever remove the "Tennessee pearls" from the head of a drum?

Im curious about this also. I've had people tell me of this "stone" in their head too. I always wondered about it but I wouldnt want to kill one to cut into its head:)

i was never really interested in eating the drum...i just like the fight they put up....i mean you can't beat a fish that fights like the dickens and weighs upwards of 20lbs......if i want to eat i go the hiwassee and catch some trout ..or i go a little further down and catch some crappie...

hey sunshine, if you have a fly-fishing outfit...most places in the park don't really require a backcast .....just simple dead drifts worked for me last saturday ...surprisingly most of the trout that i caught took it as i was stripping it in....even if you don't have a good back cast , you can catch some smokie mountain trout.

Back when I was a kid we ate everything we caught (and were happy to get it). I've ate many a drum. We just scaled them, cut the head off, rolled them in corn meal and fried them in oil. They have a "muddy taste" to them. I can't really describe it, but it's closest to the side meat of a white bass where the red meat lies. It's not the best. I've eaten buffalo and carp also, but when I got old enough to go fishing myself I caught enough of better species to rely on other fish. In my book it's hard to beat a good, big bluegill fillet deepfried in batter with hushpuppies.
