I sold most of my bass fishing gear several years ago after I sold my boat. I had several good rod/reel combos at the time...every reel I had was the older style green Shimano Curado reels that everybody seems to covet these days. Anyway...which leads me to this. I kinda got back into the fishing thing again and instead of jumping head first into the expensive stuff, I had the mentality that "a $60 reel will do just as good as the expensive ones". Well after having the guts stripped out of two cheaper ones...I've decided I am just gonna get a good one.

Went to BPS on Saturday and looked at some of them they had on display but didn't get to look long...folks were standing there talking and I didn't feel like shoving somebody out of the way. I didn't like the new Curado that much; that's the first one I went to. Looking for some suggestions from you guys. The one display model that I did like a lot, was a Pflueger Supreme XT; but I didn't know anything about them so I didn't get one without researching it first.

Looking to spend $100-$180.

For 100$ I would go to academy and get a speed spool. They're great reels and if you ever have problems Academy will take it back.

You can still find the older Curado's if you look, these are the best reels made.Hope if you want one someone might be willing to part with several. Good luck...

I figured something was up when I sold my old Curados that I had...I sold them for what I had originally bought them for. I didn't find out til after the fact, that people didn't really like the new ones. I just didn't like the feel of it up at BPS. I didn't really like the Citica either; but that was just what I could feel with the little rod butt they have them on up there.

Any thoughts on the Pflueger Supreme reel? If I had to buy one the other night, it would have been it. I have a cheaper Pflueger and its been a fair reel for what I gave for it...but can't really cast far with it.

I'll go check out the Lew's reels. Any thoughts on Quantum reels these days? I've had some of the low end ones...but never one of the higher end ones.

I've always been a Daiwa guy and a few shimanos, but the Lews is what I would buy. My friend got his tackle stolen last year and shopped around and felt of about every reel possible. He finally went with the Lews speed spools and bought 4. I have fished with them, and they are very nice reels, especially at the price.

thank you swamp

I too have to say Lews. I recently picked up the Tournament Pro, which runs a bit more, but it is buttery smooth, light, and casts like a dream.

Bass Pro should have their Pro Qualifier reels on sale on Black Friday for $69.00. I’m told these are good reels. I’m going to try a few of them.

the best cheap real i have ever used is the bionic plus from bass pro. they were so good bass pro has just changed the looks and bumped them up $10 every year for the past couple. i still have the first one at 6:4:1 in left hand that must be at least 4 years old and hasnt missed a beat. used it so much the letters for the magnet drag control are long gone on it. have the next model too in 5:4:1 and use it as a flipping reel and it has stood up to that very well. i think they are still under 80 right now but i dont know if the newest model has been changed at all.

I have the Lews Speed Spool, two Curados and a Revo... While I like the Curado the best it probably only because I have had it for years... the Lews are great and would not hesitate to buy more just like them. I would not spend the money difference for the Curado. The Revo is ok too I guess.... for some reason it is the last one I pick up though.

I saw a black friday ad at Academy for the Lews reels... probably going to buy another one.
