Check out the Shimano Crucial crankbait rods. For the big cranks get a 7 foot or 7'2" medium heavy. Crucials are good rods , but a carrot stick is about the same price. Reel wise I love my Revo winch, but you may try the KVD quantums or the Revo S .

Money no object:
St. Croix Legend Tournament Bass LTBC710HM / MAGNUM CRANKER, with a Shimano Calais DC 200 Reel. You will love the unique sound the reel makes and it is unbeatable casting into wind! I wish I had enough money for ten of the reels (got two).

Good sm poles for light line..... For the money quantum pt 20 on a 6.6 st. crois avid med. light or spend another 100$ and get the Tx legend 6.6 med light with the fast tip... great for throwing 1/16 to 1/4 oz stuff.

I'm looking for a long rod with enough flex to whip a DD22 along witha reel smooth enough to let half the spool peel off...without a nasty backlash. I've learned the hard way that kinks in fluoro resulting from wind knots = lost crankbaits when snaggedemoBang.

My favorite crankbait combo is a 7 foot Airrus Co-Matrix 457 medium action with a 5:1 Shimano Curado.

I've got an older Abu-Garcia 4600 3.8:1 ratio that works fantastic for deep running crankbaits. You can fish it all day without being worn out.

beetlespin - 8/14/2008 12:07 PM I have a brand new Curado 200 5:1 retrieve for you for $160. As for a crankbait rod, the ole 7'2" carrot is pretty good.

The price is good, however, I'm looking for a 6:2:1 or 7:1.

Each to his own but a slower retrieve is way better for a big crank.

What Lance said, Jason. Go slow ... go deep ... be happy . . . . . and not as tired.

Get a custom crankin rod from FA, Coach, or John Miles. Mass produced rods are for chuckleheads. emoBigsmile

After using the Curado tonight, I must admit that I was impressed. However, I'm curious as to how you guys figure that a slower gear ratio will enable a crank to dig deeper. Isn't the ratio just a proportion of how much line the reel takes up with each revolution of the handleemoScratch?

Its because DD cranks actually run a little deeper on a slow to medium return. There is a tendency to over crank with a high speed reel. If you are disciplined you can get by with a high speed reel but I still prefer a 5:1. Of course I like my new Zillions so much that I will compromise for now and as soon as the slow retrieve zillions come out I will buy a couple and switch these to other techniques.
