I had some issues with my motor this morning on the river. It ran perfect, we fished, but when I re-started it, it was missing badly. I kept driving and it lunged forward like it was going to clear up but only did twice and never occurred again. I checked the spark and both plugs are getting spark. someone suggested junk in the carb but I'm not convinced.

If I can't figure it out, who in the Chattanooga area will work on a 1957 Evinrude outboard? Believe it or not, parts are still very common.

Do you use 100% gas? If not and you didn't treat it to off set the ethanol..... Then I would have to agree with the carb problem. I had the same problem on my 85 model Evenrude, Didn't treat the gas and first trip was a perfect running motor, second trip it was sputtering like yours and I couldn't run wide open, then next trip it started up twice and died and then wouldn't start at all.

For years they were the best motors on the lake, a couple of bad engine designs in the 1990s ruined the company.I have a1988 110 evinrude that has never failed me after 22 years on the water.

wrechin2 on the forum would be my choice of who to take it to. emoGeezer

Glad to see you figured it out. I was going to suggest you load test the coil to see if the spark was strong enough. The tool I have can adjust the gap and can idetify ignition system breakdown such as that. Just because they have spark doesn't mean it is strong enough as you have found out. Happy boating! emoToast

James,

Should something arise out of my league you would be able to work on my '57? I have some good websites bookmarked that sell parts. IE: for a lower unit re-build. (Knock on wood). These motors are awesome, just don't laugh at my rusted trailer :)
