OK, I have moved into the world of wireless web... with a little help from my employer. I'm sitting in the living room logged on via a Verizon Wireless Card. It's a NewsChannel 9 computer that we are configuring to use to edit and file web stories from the field. I am really amazed by the speed. I expected it to be slow as molasses... but it performs far better than my expectations. BTW, don't tell NewsChannel 9 I'm testing their new computer it on CFF. emoBigsmile I'm adding a photo just to see how long it takes.

Looking good Richard, you're in the big time now

Thanks... I routinely use http://www.speakeasy.net/speedtest/ ... fastest upload speed I've monitored so far is 350 kbps. Of course they advertise 500-800 average, but obviously they're going to advertise absolute "optimum." On text and regular web I detect relatively little difference from my old desktop w/Comcast. Of course the real test will come when we start uploading video to the web. I was afraid it wouldn't work at all (at least in a reasonable time frame), but the test or two I've done so far appears that it will work better than I expected.

I hear you there... I jumped online at Booker T today in the car while fishing with my boys. I carry my laptop everywhere and have often said since wireless came out - "I can take over the world with my laptop". And if your card ever breaks (which you usually trash your first one - you'll see) you can use your internal wireless to pick up hot spots everywhere. McD's, hotels, and neighborhoods where people don't secure thier wireless connection. You can jump on anywhere. Welcome to wireless....

On this wireless system, I just tested at 1443kbs down, and 253kbs up and 35ms Latency?? s this good or bad?

I use Bellsouth/ATT DSL.

many reasons spur... one of the other computers on your network could be surfing, time of day makes a difference
(imagine rush hour in atlanta on i-75) the server you are connecting to may have heavy traffic, the dsl itself may be performing poorly, the pc itself may be performing poorly (ie. lots of apps running in the background bogging down the
the cpu).
internet speed tests are NOT just an indicator of the speed that you are paying for from your isp
they are an indicator of the performance of the totality of what you have. speed you are paying for, internet performance, your network performance (lan) and your pc performance, isp performance before it actually hits the internet and so on

You can add a Wireless Modem Router and make your laptop a wireless access point for the other computers in the house.

Kind of pricey right now, $200 to 250 and a violation of TOS on some carriers.

They're popular with emergency services for remote communications and with RV'ers so the whole family can surf the internet when there is no other wireless avaliable.
