Im goin to the Knoxville BPS Sat. for the Pro Weekend thing & im probably gonna pick up a few of these. They seem to be a pretty big hit especially w/ the Tx guys.Im just wondering which you all prefer the 50 or 75, what colors (i like the look of the Rayburn Red & Royal Shad), and most of all how do you all use them. From what ive been reading shallow is the ticket but do you just crank em in or rip em up & let em fall???Just tryin to pick your brains.

50's are 5/8 oz, 75's are 3/4 oz. and bigger. They were caught on both at the tx. My opinion is the red is specific to the time of year we are in RIGHT NOW. The royal shad you may get more use out of all season long... as well as the smaller bait for the type of fishing you're doing. And don't necessarily count it as a shallow bait. That's just where the fish were that day.... I ripped them, and when I felt the grass tick it, I snatched it up and then continued reeling in. Yo Yo ing it works. Retrieve back normal and stop occassionally. It's like anything. Just try different presentations until you get something to hit it. I've found them to be expensive at larger shops. I go to R&R's, they charge $6.99 for 50's and $8.99 for 75's. But Big Daddy's in So Pittsburgh has both for $5.99. Shop around Justin. They are a good bait. They also make a clear shad color that rocks too.

if rayburn red is the one with gold stripes then those are my favorite. I had one tied on all day at the guntersville tourney (along with a royal shad and chartreuse) Keep in mind we didn't have a big sack but I sure like how you can hear them in the water. I like xr50 size but get what your comfortable throwing.

I like the chrome/blue back and craw. I know of only one way to fish them, fast, faster, and smoking fast. I like to fish them on shallow stump flats and there is another way to fish them but I will pm you that. emoDance

UTCA, I just looked through the BPS flyer and they have CC Super Spots for $1.48 each during their big spring gig. The hooks on them aren't the greatest but are easily changed out with better quality. At that price you can get four at the same price as one XR50. The XRs are a quality bait and I definitely recommend picking up a couple of those too, but if you want to stock up on a few rattle baits to get things started I'd recommend the CC Spots. Agree with previous posts, the red is a great spring color but throughout the year you will be better off getting chrome/blue and shad type colors.

Not that Bass Pro isn't good, but their prices suck!! I would imagine some of these local dudes ( pro lures of Dalton) and our pal in Cleveland ( forgot their name, but their a sponsor) would probably beat Bass Pro's prices. If not get them online. I can guide you to some good websites that are much cheaper. Just my opinion.emoThumbsup

I stopped in at Decatur Bait and Tackle tonight on my way to my parents house. He had a full stock of xr75s in Rayburn Red. Priced at $5.99. I find them at BPS for 9.99, and Goosepond for 12.99. So I did what any smart man would do, and bought 8. :)

Yea, but how much are you going to sell them for??? LOL!!!emoTongue

Agree with you Fishinvol on doing business with the local tackle shops (especially sponsors) as much as possible! I thought the same thing, Wally World in Scottsboro has XRs for $5.99 - I refrained because I already have a bunch virgins still in the box. Then you drive down the road to Goosepond and they are $12.99 (which is robbery). At least if they run short they can always send someone up to Wallys, buy them out, and mark them up over %100...

I should rephrase... the tackle shop at Goosepond is now called Waterfront at Goosepond. They pound you on prices, but have one heck of a burger... When I go to Guntersville, I go to Goosepond Bait and Tackle (owned by the original owner of WatG) which is at the junction of AL-79 and HWY 72. Great prices, and nice folks.

I wish I was in the Chattanooga area more so I could make our sponsers rich :) Well, other than Rob... I used to put diapers on Parker.

I've always caught more fish on the 50's than the 75's. The same with rattletraps and super spots.

Water color and existing sunlight usually determines what color I start out with. If I catch one and can determine what it's feeding on, I try to pick a color pattern that matches the forage.

You may have the sales paper, but in case you don't, I've looked through it and do not see the xr's on sale.

I'm heading to the BPS sale too Sunday. I like the looks of the new Nitro reels and rods and I'm gonna try for KVD's autograph.

I personally can't stand either b/c they don't offer them in 1/4oz. A full day of burning heavy lipless baits is a drag. team-d's advice of getting the Super Spots would be my choice. Royal Shad, Royal Red, and Rayburn Red are all available in the Spots, they're available in 1/4oz, and they're cheaper.

I forgot something UTC ... since you mentioned the XPS baits, that XPS lipless crank is a great bait. It's available in 3/8oz, which pretty much doesn't exist in the lipless world. It still has a large profile, but isn't as tiring to fish and the colors are great.

Not only is red specific to Spring, but the Royal Red xr50 is specific to Guntersville and Nickajack. I've caught them all day long at both lakes but never even got a whiff on Chick or Hiwassee. If I were you, I would pick up the xr50 in Gold Black, Oxbow, and Royal Red. Those three patterns will cover you all year. As recommended, pick up the same patterns in the CC Spot for situations that require a slower sink rate.

As for retrieves, it's all about generating a reaction strike. Running parallel to or just over weeds is their strength...when you tick or snatch it from weeds, hold on. Paralleling rip-rap and fancasting shallow flats are other areas they excel. Wherever you fish them, make sure you are coming into contact with the cover of choice.

For some reason last summer, for about a month I absolutely killed with the royal red on Chickamauga. Before that and even after that there hasn't been much. Kind of weird!!

I own several of the XPS rattling baits and honestly they are great baits!! Horrible hooks, but you can switch those out. They run a little different than other baits as well.

Not hijacking.... But Louie used that new VibraTrap below Nick in the chrome/blue and SLAYED the big hybrid/cherokee bass on it. Carried a much bigger bite and has a bit more thump than the standard Bill Lewis Traps. He wound up losing it a few days later in a blow down, but is ALL over me to get him another one. Nice bait.
